PHOENIX — The stars have aligned – rainbow trout are coming to a galaxy of waters close to home for millions, plus 2009 fishing licenses for state waters or the urban program lakes are now on sale for half price, advises Arizona Game and Fish Department officials.

“It doesn’t get much better than this, especially during these tough economic times,” said Fisheries Chief Kirk Young. “Your family can get quality outdoor recreation and delicious trout for the table, all at half price.”

The 2009 annual state fishing license is now on sale for just $11.75 for residents and $35.13 for nonresidents, but if you plan to catch trout, don’t forget your trout stamp.

The Urban Program Fishing License is on sale for $9.25 for both residents and nonresidents alike.

“The month of November offers some of the best fishing available at Urban Program lakes,” said Eric Swanson, urban fishing program manager. “The lakes have been loaded with catfish all fall, stockings of bluegill sunfish took place in late October and the first trout delivery begins November 16.”

This week (Wednesday, Nov. 4), the Lower Salt River near Phoenix is being stocked with feisty rainbow trout.

“This fishery is just minutes away from Tempe and Mesa and has become extremely popular with winter trout anglers. Where else can you catch trout in a scenic desert river adjacent to a major metropolitan area? The answer – only here my friends,” Young said.

Trout are also being stocked this week at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood, Fain and Lynx lakes in the Prescott area, Wet Beaver Creek in the Verde Valley, plus Parker Canyon and Patagonia lakes in southern Arizona.

The following week, trout are being stocked in Saguaro Lake near Phoenix, Francis Short Pond in Flagstaff, Oak Creek, the Verde River (between Cottonwood and Camp Verde), Cluff Pond and Roper Lake near Safford and in Rose Canyon on Mt. Lemon near Tucson.

The week of Nov. 16, trout will also be stocked in Canyon Lake and Tempe Town Lake. Be sure to mark Nov. 24 on your calendar – that is the Welcome Back the Trout Celebration at Tempe Town Lake with a fishing clinic starting at 3 p.m.

“This has become an annual tradition in Arizona to kick-off the holidays,” said Young. “So come fish with us and catch some holiday cheer.”

Topock Gorge Fishing Report from Capt. Doyle’s Guide Service. Crappie are on the bite at both the South and the North Dyke and are being caught on minnows. Water temperature in the Topock Gorge is holding at 68º, the fish are fattening up for the winter, and anglers are hoping the bite will last for a couple more months! The smallmouth bass are free swimming while the largemouth bass are holding tight against the tulles. Although anglers area averaging a limit, they are returning them to the water to be caught another day. Both species prefer the darker colored plastic. Sizes for the largemouth bass have been running between 1- and 4-pounds, and the smallmouth bass are averaging between a pound and 3-pounds. The catfish bite has been steady. Needless to say they are favoring anchovy. Bluegill are also on the bite. Cruising at the edge of the tulles, the panfish can be picked up on both plastics and night crawlers.

Fishing Report provided to you by Karen Coats (Sandpoint Bait and Tackle Shop Supervisor)

ALAMO LAKE – Report courtesy Mark Knapp, Alamo Lake State Park. Well folks, there’s not allot to report this week. A storm front blew in yesterday and has pretty much shut everything down. Anglers got blown off the lake today and have been in the office giving the bass fishing a thumbs down. Spoons and plastics seem to be working the best right now. Most of the bass are hiding in about 25 to 30 foot of water. The average catch this morning was 3 to 5 bass. All dinks.

Crappie fishing still has not turned on yet. The one, and only, crappie caught today was on a crankbait! At least we know there starting to get hungry.

Cat fishing is o.k. Anglers are catching the cats in the back of coves using night crawlers for bait. If it were me, I would stay home and go golfing this week. Things should pick up once the weather chills out.

The lake level is at 1116 with pulse releases of 40 cfs. Both ramps are in operation at this time. You really have to watch for wildlife on the way out here. So far this week a cow and a burrow have been hit. I hit a giant jackrabbit the other night with my wife’s car and am finding out a grill for a Nissan is not cheap. Anyway, be careful coming out here. Hopefully next week I have better news. That’s all I got. Mark

OUTLOOK:
Alamo Lake:
The lake elevation continues to be good, presently at about 1,121.5 feet. Largemouth bass surveys conducted by AGFD in April indicate that bass are very abundant, although a large proportion of the population remains in the protected slot. Fish are still in poorer condition than they were a year ago, which may be a result of low shad numbers. Fishing is expected to be good throughout the summer.

Channel catfish should be good to excellent throughout the summer. Alamo Lake is loaded with small channel catfish, especially at the upper end of the lake, but larger fish are present. During the spring surveys, AGFD encountered far more channel catfish than usual, the majority in the 2-6 lb range, and they were in very good condition. A hoop-netting survey specifically targeting channel catfish was conducted in early June, with abundant catfish captured, up to 7 pounds. Based on the sampling, the most productive area appears to be on the western side of the lake, especially the middle third of the lake shoreline.

There are other fish present such as bluegill, redear sunfish and carp that are a lot of fun to catch. All types of bait should work. Large tilapia in the 5-6 pound range are abundant, and are an unexploited resource. As the weather warms, shift from slowly working plastics in deeper water to crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and top-water lures for bass. For channel catfish, any of the prepared catfish baits, as well as chicken livers and shrimp will work. Occasionally channel catfish are even caught on bass lures.

Both of the boat ramps are useable at this time. The store at the lake is now open, although fuel is not available. The certified scale that was previously located at the Park office is now located in the store. At the store you can get ice, snacks, fishing tackle and bait, as well as information on the fishing bring everything with you. If you run short of supplies, you might be able to pick it up at the Wayside Inn in Wayside, or in Wenden.

Lake Havasu & Topock Gorge:
Fishing for largemouth bass, as well as smallmouth bass, is expected to remain good through the summer. The size will range from 13 inches and up (remember, there is a 13-inch minimum size limit on the lower Colorado River), with an occasional fish greater than 5 pounds.

Striped bass fishing continues to be somewhat problematic this year, with catch rates far below what has been experienced the past couple of years. Shad numbers are lower this year, which affects the striper fishing, as striped bass tend to concentrate mainly on shad. Remember, shad schools move around, and populations tend to fluctuate, so spots that have been “hot” in the past may no longer be so if the shad have moved elsewhere, or are in lower numbers. The majority of striped bass in Lake Havasu tend to be smaller fish of 1 to 2 pounds, but the occasional 20-30 pound fish is caught.

Channel catfish as well as bluegill and redear sunfish will be good to excellent. Lake Havasu is well known for large (2-3 pound) redear sunfish, and with the proliferation of the quagga mussel in the lake, we may see larger numbers of large redears. Redear sunfish are also known as “shellcrackers,” due to their preference for eating clams and mussels, so they may actually benefit from the presence of the invasive quagga mussel. There have also been reports of crappie fishing picking up, a species that used to be sought after in the lake, but has declined in recent years. Flathead catfish fishing should be fair at the lower end of the lake (Bill Williams River Arm) through the spring, although surveys in the fall indicated that they are taking up residence farther north in the lake than in the past. Flathead catfish can reach as high as 40 pounds or better in Lake Havasu. When fishing for them, select the interior points in the coves and the areas where artificial structure has been placed.

Carp fishing is likely to be poor, for some time into the future, depending on the final result of the Koi Herpes Virus outbreak currently affecting the carp in Lake Havasu.

Take precautions to make sure your boat and equipment is clean before leaving the water to make sure you don’t spread quagga mussels to other waters by accident. This invasive species certainly has profound effects on water delivery and control structures, boat engines, and likely on fish populations. Quaggas are abundant and widely distributed in Lake Havasu, but are absent from many of our interior lakes. Help keep those lakes quagga-free. Make sure your boat and trailer are free of the mussels, drain all bilge and livewells before leaving the area, and most importantly, let your boat bake in the sun for 3-5 days in the sun before you launch it at another lake.

Colorado River (Parker Strip Area, between Parker Dam and Headgate Rock):
Fishing is expected to be good to excellent for smallmouth bass, with fish over two pounds in size common. The best smallmouth bass fishing can be found in the upper half of the Parker Strip, while largemouth bass are more numerous in the lower half, in very respectable numbers. In addition, redear sunfish should also be good to excellent in the pound-plus sizes. AZGFD’s most recent surveys turned up good numbers of redear sunfish in the two-pound range. That is dinner-plate sized, folks! Channel and flathead catfish are always fair to good in this section of the Colorado River.

Take precautions to make sure your boat and equipment is clean before leaving the water to make sure you don’t spread quagga mussels to other waters by accident.

Colorado River (between Palo Verde Diversion Dam and Walter’s Camp):
This area should be fair for both smallmouth bass (in the channel) up river from the I-10 Bridge and largemouth bass (in the backwaters) throughout the entire area. Channel and flathead catfish are always fair to good in this section of the Colorado River. Most of the flathead catfish will be smaller ones, in the 2 to 5 pound size range, with an occasional fish over 20 pounds. Annual fisheries surveys this spring turned up several fish in the 40 to 50 pound range, so trophy flatheads are always a possibility. Look for large deep pools formed at eddies for the larger fish. The best time for fishing for both species of catfish will be all summer and on into the fall months. Generally, the hotter the weather is, the better the cat-fishing. Nighttime is the best time to go after both species of catfish.

This section of the Colorado River, all the way down to Yuma, is where the invasive vegetative species known as Giant Salvinia is located. Quagga mussels are also found here. If using a boat, make sure that boats, live wells, engines, and trailers are clean before leaving the area. The last thing that we want to have happen is the movement of invasive species to other waters.

Colorado River (between Walter’s Camp and Picacho State Park):
This section of the Colorado River is relatively remote, and can only be accessed by boat from either end. Fishing is expected to be good to excellent for flathead catfish with sizes reaching over 40 pounds. The best time will be summer and on into the fall months. The hotter the temperature the better the fishing is. The various backwaters will be good for largemouth bass and other sunfish (bluegill and redear). Other species available in the main river are smallmouth bass, channel catfish, and striped bass.

Colorado River (between Picacho State Park and Imperial Dam):
This area is expected to be good to excellent for largemouth bass, channel catfish, and flathead catfish. Bass and channel catfish in excess of 5 pounds are relatively numerous, along with flathead catfish as large as 40 pounds. Our survey this spring turned up an 89-pound monster that should still be lurking in the waters where it was found. Bluegill are also present in the various backwaters. Occasional striped bass will be caught in the main river channel, especially near Imperial Dam. Fishermen did quite well on small stripers this spring between Martinez Lake and Imperial Dam.

Colorado River (between Laguna and Morelos dams):
This area will be good for largemouth bass and flathead catfish. Accessing the water can be a problem, as river flows are much lower than historically, and launching a boat can be a challenge. Accessibility to the river is dependent on the amount of water being released upstream. A small shallow-draft boat or float tube should get you into some good fishing. Bass in excess of 5 pounds are common, and larger ones definitely exist. Flathead catfish over 20 pounds are also a good bet in the deeper pools. The lower end has had some dredging work done, and larger boats may be able to get on the river in that area.

Because of the increase in border issues and illegal activity on the lower end of this stretch of the river, we recommend using extreme caution while fishing the area from Pilot Knob to Morelos Dam.

Regional Hot Spots:
Alamo Lake will continue to be the hot spot for largemouth bass and channel catfish. Since there appears to be an overabundance of small bass and channel catfish in the lake at present, we recommend keeping as many of the smaller bass and catfish as you can legally possess in order to try and reduce the population a little. Remember, though, an advisory on mercury contamination is in effect for Alamo Lake, so refer to your fishing regulations for recommended consumption rates. Next choice would be Lake Havasu for large and smallmouth bass and redears, Parker Strip for smallmouth bass and redear sunfish, and the Colorado River below Walter’s Camp for flathead catfish. Our surveys in May revealed that there is a very impressive population of flathead catfish in the lower Imperial Division between Picacho State Park and Imperial Dam. Expect many in the 5-10 pounds size class, but we know of at least one state record lurking in those waters.
If you need any additional information don’t hesitate to contact the Yuma Regional office at (928) 342-0091, and we will be happy to accommodate you.

Sales increase mirrors recreational fishing’s heyday in the 1960s and 1970s

ALEXANDRIA, VA (Oct. 20, 2009) – The Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation (RBFF) and the American Sportfishing Association (ASA) today announced the publication of a quarterly fishing license sales index to track trends that have an impact on the industry and the entire recreational fishing community.

“Not since the 1970s have we seen a single-year increase in fishing license sales like we’ve seen so far in 2009,” said ASA President and CEO Mike Nussman. “Understanding how the needle moves in terms of sport-fishing participation is important not just for the sport-fishing industry, but for the entire outdoor recreation community. This new license metric will provide everyone with important sales and participation information.”

“Our recent research shows that fishing is the number one gateway activity for introducing children and their families to the outdoors,” said RBFF President and CEO Frank Peterson. “We believe that national campaigns such as Take Me Fishing™ and state-based sport-fishing marketing and direct mail are also having a positive effect.”

As of Sept. 1, 2009, state fish and wildlife agencies reported a 7.7 percent positive change in the number of licenses sold year-to-date compared to the same months last year (January – July 2009 vs. January – July 2008). The same states also saw a seven percent increase in the number of licenses sold in July 2009 compared with July 2008.

According to Southwick Associates, the firm analyzing the data, fishing license sales increased at a faster rate in the first quarter of 2009 compared to the second quarter. Increases of 20 percent or more were common in the first quarter. However, a larger volume of sales occurred in the second quarter – the peak period for license sales nationally – and had a greater effect on the year-to-date sales trend than first quarter license sales. After standardizing the July index to contain the same states as previous months, license sales increased nearly a full percentage point over May and June sales. In general, more fishing licenses are sold during the second quarter (April, May, June) than any other time of the year.

“Reasons for the 2009 license sales increases range from a slow economy, which may allow people more time to engage in outdoor activities, to recreational fishing being a lower cost alternative to other forms of recreation,” said Peterson.

“When the index moves by just a tenth of a point, 40,000 anglers have entered or quit sport-fishing. Considering the typical angler spends $176 a year on just fishing tackle alone, and contributes over $40 annually to conservation via license dollars and excise taxes, a small change in the index represents big changes on the ground,” said Nussman.

Then click here and become a “fan” of the Arizona Game and Fish Department on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/azgafd. It’s interesting. It can be loads of fun. And you can connect up with others who share your same outdoor interests.

“Currently, there are 26,480 Arizonans on Facebook who have indicated they like fishing, hunting, shooting sports, boating and similar outdoor activities, so you’ll potentially have a lot of new friends out there who share your outdoor passions,” said Public Information Officer Rory Aikens, who himself is a recent Facebook convert.

The Game and Fish Department is also on another social network, Twitter. “We are trying to stay up with the times and provide outdoor enthusiasts with multiple ways to get timely information even while they are on the go,” Aikens said.

The department also has a tremendous Web presence at www.azgfd.gov and uses e-mail-based subscriptions to send news updates, fishing reports, hunter highlights and a number of other e-news products.

You can even go blogging at the Game and Fish Department, post photographs and share such things as fishing or hunting experiences.

“These evolving social networking sites provide all of us another opportunity to get timely information, share ideas or experiences, and become involved in the outdoor world, even while sitting indoors dreaming about our next outing,” Aikens said.

“The opening of this unique fishery has become like a small party each autumn for Apache trout aficionados,” said Kirk Young, the fisheries chief for the Arizona Game and Fish Department.

This catch-and-release section of Silver Creek requires Apache and rainbow trout to be immediately released unharmed, and is artificial flies and lures only with barbless hooks. This segment of Silver Creek is open for fishing from Oct. 1 through March 1 of each year.

“This seasonal fishery is especially revered by fly and spin anglers who have discovered the joys of fishing for native Apache trout,” Young said.

Silver Creek is located east of Show Low about 5 miles on Highway 60. Turn north off 60 onto Bourdon Ranch Road for five miles to Hatchery Way Road. Turn east on Hatchery Way Road for 1 mile to where you can park at the Silver Creek Hatchery. Then simply follow the signs.

Don’t forget that the White Mountains of Arizona is the only place where you can fish for pure-strain Apache trout. This large area offers lots of opportunities to fish for this native salmonid.

Apache trout can be caught by a variety of methods, including wet or dry flies, or small lures such as spinners. For more information on how and where to fish for Apache trout, visit the Arizona Game and Fish Department’s Web site.

Catfish stockings cease during the summer months because of increased water temperatures at the urban lakes and the increased stress associated with transporting fish all the way from Arkansas in the summer.
There are 21 city park lakes in 11 cities across the state currently participating in the urban fishing program. Each lake is surrounded by distinctive signage that identifies the water as part of this active fish stocking program.
The every-other-week catfish stockings will continue through mid-November, which is when the urban program will switch over to winter stockings of rainbow trout.

Note: Contact the US Forest Service in Springerville for up to date information on forest conditions at (928) 333-4372.

BECKER LAKE— Fishing is fair to good. The lake is down about 4 feet. The boat ramp is accessible. Becker is open to artificial lures and flies only, barbless hooks, and a 2-trout bag and possession limit.

Try lures such as Super Dupers, spinners (Panther Martin and Rooster Tails), rainbow colored Z-rays, and KastMasters.

Try flies such as peacock ladies, wooly worms and wooly buggers in brown, black or gray, semi-seal leeches, prince nymphs, zug bugs, pheasant tails, hares ears, small scuds, and zebra midges.

Fish during the early morning from daylight to noon and just before sunset for best results. The lake is open to electric trolling motors or up to 10 hp. gas motors. There is a fishing pier located on the northwest shoreline of the lake. This lake has easy boat and shore fishing access.

BIG LAKE — Fishing is fair to good. Boat ramps are accessible. Anglers are catching mostly rainbow and cutthroat trout in the deep areas of the lake, but some brook trout are starting to show up. Trout are being caught closer to the surface as cool weather and rainstorms occur.

Try worms, Power bait, corn, and salmon eggs, lures such as spinners (Mepps, Rooster Tail, Panther Martin), Super Dupers, Z-Rays, KastMasters, Crickhoppers (yellow and orange), and Rapalas, and flies such as wooly worms, wooly buggers, semi-seal leeches, peacock ladies, and nymphs in black, brown, or green.

Boat anglers are catching trout using cowbells with an attached lure, fly or worm. Shore anglers should try fishing off deep rocky shorelines early in the morning with yellow or green Power Bait and night crawlers. The lake is open to electric trolling motors and up to 10 hp. gas motors. The store is open and has boats for rent. This lake has easy boat and shore fishing access. The South Cove boat dock has been installed.

CARNERO LAKE— Fishing is fair to good. Carnero is open to artificial lure and fly only, barbless hooks only, and a 2-trout bag and possession limit. Try small lures such as Super Dupers, Z-rays, KastMasters, and spinners (Mepps, Panther Martin and Rooster Tails), and flies such as wooly worms, wooly buggers, scud patterns, prince nymphs, zug bugs, hares ear nymphs, and peacock ladies. Also try small nymphs in black, brown, green or gray colors.

Only electric trolling motors are allowed. The lake is very weedy around the shoreline areas and is best fished with a small boat, float tube or kayak.

CLEAR CREEK RESERVOIR — Fishing is fair to good for warm water fish species. The northwest boat ramps are accessible. Try fishing with a bobber, split shot and worms near rocky shoreline areas for sunfish and bass. Also try fishing off the bottom with worms, hot dogs, and stink baits for bullheads and channel catfish.

Try worms, Power Bait, salmon eggs, and lures such as spinners (Panther Martin, Rooster Tail, and Mepps), Z-rays, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and Rapalas, and flies such as wooly worms or wooly buggers, Yeager buggers, semi-seal leeches, and peacock ladies. There are no motor restrictions on Clear Creek Reservoir. This lake has easy boat and shore fishing access.

CONCHO LAKE — No fishing opportunities currently. The lake is extremely low and very weedy. The only fish present are a couple dozen carp stranded in a small pool in front of the dam. We are encouraging anglers to remove the carp, as they are bad for the lake. Do not transport the fish alive if removing them from the lake. There is only 2-3 inches of water in some areas of the lake. The lake is mostly dry. There is private property (closed to the public) on the northwest side of the lake.

CRESCENT LAKE — Fishing is good. Trout have been active with the cooler weather associated with rainstorms and shore and boat anglers have been successful at catching fish. Boat ramps are accessible.

Try worms, Power Bait, corn, and salmon eggs, lures such as small Z-Rays, Super Dupers, KastMasters, and spinners (Mepps, Panther Martin, and Rooster Tail), and flies such as wooly worms, wooly buggers, leech patterns, peacock ladies, Warden Worrys, prince nymphs, and zug bugs. Also try small nymphs in brown, black or green.

Fly-fishers have been catching rainbow and brook trout, about 12-15 inches, on brown nymphs. A good strategy is to fish early in the morning and late in the day. The lake may still be a little weedy in shallow areas of the lake where the weed harvester was not able to reach.

Crescent is open to electric trolling motors and up to 10 hp. gas motors. The store is open. This lake has easy boat and shore fishing access. The fishing pier at the north end of the lake has been moved to the south boat ramp area. The boat dock at the west end boat ramp has been installed.

FOOL HOLLOW LAKE — Fool Hollow Lake State Park is open and fishing is fair. The lake level is down about 5 feet and all boat ramps are accessible. Anglers have been catching bluegills and black crappies off the fishing piers. For bluegill, use small hooks, light lines, just a piece of worm, and no weight for fish that you can see but are not biting. Some nice sized bass are being caught on lures and night crawlers.

Catfish and walleyes are being caught on night crawlers at night. Also, try hot dogs and stink bait for catfish. Try worms, corn, salmon eggs, and Power Bait, lures such as spinners (Mepps, Panther Martin, and Rooster Tail), spoons (Super Dupers, Z-rays, and KastMasters), rubber lead head jigs, and Rapalas, and flies such as wooly worms, wooly buggers, and semi-seal leeches.

Try fishing around rocky areas, tree stumps and fishing piers for black crappies, bluegills, and walleyes.

The lake is open to electric trolling motors and up to 10 hp gas motors. This lake has easy boating and shore fishing access.

GREER LAKES — Fishing is poor to fair. All three Greer Reservoirs have been drawn down significantly for irrigation downstream. No boats can be launched at Bunch and River Reservoirs because water levels are very low and the concrete curb at the end of the two boat ramps are out of water.

Try worms, corn, salmon eggs, and Power Bait, lures such as spinners, Z-rays, Super Dupers, KastMasters, and Rapalas, and flies such as wooly worms, wooly buggers, peacock ladies, and small nymphs in black, brown or green colors.

Bunch Reservoir and Tunnel Reservoir are open to electric trolling motors only, and River Reservoir is open to electric trolling motors and up to 10 hp. gas motors. These lakes have easy small boat, float tube, and Kayak fishing access, as well as shore access.

HULSEY LAKE — Fishing is poor. The lake is nearly full. Weeds are present around shoreline areas. Water temperatures are generally high during the summer months, so fish early in the morning and late in the day. Dissolved oxygen levels are getting better, almost 5 parts per million as of Sunday. Try worms, corn, salmon eggs, and Power Bait, small lures such as spinners (Mepps, Panther Martin, and Rooster Tail), small spoons such as Super Dupers, KastMasters, and Z-rays, and flies such as peacock ladies, prince nymphs, zug bugs, and woolly worms.

The lake is open to electric trolling motors only. Hulsey has easy shore fishing access. There is a short hiking trail to the lake. There is no boat ramp. The water temperature last week was 61 degrees.

LEE VALLEY RESERVOIR — Fishing is poor to fair because of a continuing algae bloom and high pH levels. You should fish very early in the morning and late in the day.

Try lures such as spinners (Mepps, Rooster Tail, and Panther Martin), small spoons such as Super Dupers, KastMasters, and Z-rays, and flies such as peacock ladies, prince nymphs, zug bugs, hares ear, scud patterns, and wooly worms.

Lee Valley Lake is open to artificial lures and flies only, with a 2-trout bag and possession limit. There is a 12-inch minimum length limit on all fish. No bait fishing is allowed. The lake is open to electric trolling motors only. There is easy boat and shore fishing access.

LUNA LAKE — Fishing is fair. There is a green algae bloom on the lake. Some anglers have been catching trout on yellow Power Bait and night crawlers. Try worms, corn, salmon eggs, and Power Bait, lures such as Panther Martin, Rooster Tail, and Mepps spinners, small spoons like KastMasters, Z-rays, and Super Dupers, and flies such as wooly worms and wooly buggers, peacock ladies, zug bugs, prince nymphs, and black, brown or green colored nymphs.

The store is open. The lake is open to electric trolling motors and/or up to 10 hp. gas motors. This lake has easy boat and shore fishing access.

LYMAN LAKE — Lyman Lake State Park is open and fishing is good. Anglers have been catching channel catfish on worms, hot dogs, and stink baits. Largemouth bass are being caught on lures and night crawlers. Sunfish are being caught on worms. Try worms, Power Bait, catfish stink baits, and lures such as spinners (Panther Martin, Rooster Tail, and Mepps), crankbaits, and Rapalas.

Try fishing lures along rocky areas for bass and walleye. Try fishing early in the morning and late in the day. The Lyman Lake recreation area is managed by Lyman Lake State Park and camping is available.

There are also cabins for rent. There is a fish consumption advisory here, so check with the State Parks Office at the lake for details. Also contact the Arizona Game and Fish Department’s Region 1 office at (928) 367-4281. There are no motor restrictions on Lyman Lake. The store is open.

NELSON RESERVOIR — Fishing is fair. The lake is nearly full. The lake has a green algae bloom. The weed harvester has cut weeds at the lake. The boat ramps at the dam and southern end are accessible. Unlimited harvest of rainbow and brown trout from Sept. 1 through March 31 2010.

Try worms, Power Bait, lures such as spinners (Panther Martin, Rooster Tail, Mepps), small spoons such as KastMasters, Z-rays, and Super Dupers, jigs, and flies such as wooly worms, wooly buggers, peacock ladies, prince nymphs, and zug bugs. Also try nymphs in black, brown or green colors. Nelson Reservoir is open to electric trolling motors and up to 10 hp gas motors.

RAINBOW LAKE — Fishing for warmwater species is fair and poor for trout. The lake is down about 4 feet and weedy. A very strong blue green algae bloom is causing very high pH levels, measuring 9.7 on Sept. 8. The boat ramp is accessible. Bullheads are being caught off the fishing pier.

Try worms, Power Bait, lures such as spinners (Panther Martin, Rooster Tail, and Mepps) spoons (Super Dupers, Z-rays, Daredevils), and Rapalas, and flies such as wooly worms, wooly buggers, and peacock ladies. Rainbow Lake is open to electric trolling motors and up to 10 hp gas motors.

SCOTTS RESERVOIR — Fishing is fair. Try worms, Power Bait, corn, and salmon eggs, lures such as spinners (Panther Martin, Rooster Tail, and Mepps), spoons such as Super Dupers, Z-rays, and KastMasters, and flies such as wooly worms, wooly buggers, peacock ladies, prince nymphs, and zug bugs.

Try fishing with worms, hot dogs, and stink baits for catfish. A 17-pound channel catfish was caught on Monday.

Scott Reservoir is open to electric trolling motors only. There is easy boat and shore fishing access.

The water level is about 7 feet low, so use caution when launching a boat. The boat ramp is accessible.

SHOW LOW LAKE — Fishing is fair. The boat ramp is accessible. The fishing piers have been straightened out and are accessible. There is a new boat dock by the boat ramp. The boat dock at the boat ramp is only for boat anglers, no fishing or swimming is allowed.

Anglers have been catching rainbow trout on worms. A few bass are being caught on lures.

Try trolling Rapalas early in the morning and late in the evening for walleyes. Try worms, corn, salmon eggs, and Power Bait, lures such as spinners (Panther Martin, Rooster Tail, and Mepps), spoons such as Super Dupers, Z-rays, KastMasters, rubber lead head jigs, Rapalas, and flies such as wooly worms, wooly buggers, semi-seal leeches, prince nymphs, peacock ladies and black, brown or green colored nymphs.

The lake is open to electric trolling motors and up to 10 hp gas motors. The store is open. This lake has easy boat and shore fishing access.

WOODLAND LAKE — Fishing is poor. New regulations went into effect at Woodland Lake on Jan. 1, reducing the daily bag and possession limit to four trout. The lake is low and very weedy. The boat ramp is weedy but usable for small boats, float tubes, and kayaks.

Try worms. Power Bait, corn, and salmon eggs, lures such as spinners (Panther Martin, Rooster Tail, and Mepps), spoons such as Super Dupers, Z-rays, and KastMasters, and flies such as wooly worms, wooly buggers, peacock ladies, prince nymphs, and zug bugs.

You should fish early in the morning and late in the day. Woodland Lake is open to electric trolling motors only. This lake has easy boat and shore fishing access. The water temperature on Sept. 8 was 67 degrees.

WHITE MOUNTAIN STREAMS:

WEST FORK BLACK RIVER — Fishing is fair to good. The stream has moderate flows. The stream was stocked last week for the last time this season.

Try worms, Power Bait, corn, and salmon eggs, small spinners such as Mepps, Rooster Tails, and Panther Martins, small spoons (KastMasters, Z-rays, and Super Dupers), Rapalas and flies such as wooly worms or wooly buggers and small weighted nymphs in black, brown, and green colors.

EAST FORK BLACK RIVER — Fishing is good. A 21-inch brown trout was caught near Diamond Rock on worms this weekend. The stream has moderate flows. The stream was stocked last week for the last time this season.

Try drifting worms, Power Bait, corn, and salmon eggs through pools or casting small lures such as spinners (Mepps, Panther Martin, Rooster Tail), small spoons (KastMasters, Z-rays, and Super Dupers), Rapalas and flies such as wooly worms or wooly buggers and small weighted nymphs in black, brown or green colors.

SHEEP CROSSING — Fishing is fair. The stream has moderate flows. It will be stocked this week with catchable sized Apache Trout. Try worms, corn, salmon eggs, and Power Bait, small lures such as spinners (Mepps, Rooster Tail, and Panther Martin), spoons such as Super Dupers, Z-rays, and KastMasters, and flies such as wooly worms, and small nymphs in black, brown or green colors.

LITTLE COLORADO RIVER GREER — Fishing is fair to good. Stream flows are moderate. It will be stocked this week with catchable sized Rainbow Trout. Try drifting worms, Power Bait, corn, and salmon eggs or casting small lures or flies through deep pools.

Try worms, Power Bait, corn, and salmon eggs, small lures such as spinners (Mepps, Panther Martin, Rooster Tail), small spoons (KastMasters, Z-rays, and Super Dupers), Rapalas and flies such as wooly worms or wooly buggers and small weighted nymphs in black, brown or green colors.

Plan to have stout fishing line on your poles when visiting the Urban Program Lakes this fall season – the channel catfish are expected to average 2-plus pounds when the stockings recommence on the week of Sept. 21-26.
“Those looking to hook some larger fish this fall will want to visit the urban lakes for the channel catfish action,” said Eric Swanson, the Urban Fisheries program manager. “But be sure to have fresh line on your reels – hard-fighting 2-plus-pound catfish can put your equipment to the test and bust your old line.”
Swanson explained that catfish stockings cease during the summer months because of increased water temperatures at the urban lakes and the increased stress associated with transporting fish all the way from Arkansas in the summer.
“Despite the challenging economy, or maybe because of it, we are experiencing increased angler participation this year in Arizona’s Urban Fishing Program,” Swanson said.
Swanson added that this participation trend certainly makes sense. “Lots of people have recognized the excellent value of this high quality and affordable outdoor fishing experience close to home. That fits right in with our urban program motto; if people can’t get to the fish, we bring the fish to the people.”
Don’t forget that if you have friends or family visiting from out of state, especially during winter, the price for an annual urban fishing license is the same as it is for resident anglers – the Class U (urban) fishing license is just $18.50. “That is just about the cost of a single fish dinner at a nice restaurant,” Swanson pointed out.
Youth under age 14 fish for free – they do not need a fishing license.

TUCSON – Pena Blanca Lake west of Nogales, Arizona on the Nogales Ranger District, Coronado National Forest, which has been closed since October 2008 due to an environmental clean-up project, will partially re-open Friday, Sept. 4.

While the Lake has not refilled with water, the public will be allowed into the area to view and assess the results of the reclamation project, and to use nearby recreation facilities closed since last fall.

The locked gate on SR289 will be moved to allow entry to the Lake and to Lower Thumb Picnic Area, Upper Thumb Picnic Area, and Lower White Rock Campsite.

In addition, Red Rock Campground and its access road on the east side of the Lake will also be reopened.

The public is welcome to picnic and camp in the facilities provided; however, activities near or within the dry lake bed will be restricted by Forest Service officials on site. No vehicles, including ATVs, OHVs, or bicycles, will be allowed past the boat ramp parking area. Because so little water has collected in the lake bed and because fish have not been restocked, there is no swimming, boating, or fishing.

The public is also asked to avoid fish habitat structures in the dry areas of the lake bed. These structures were built by the Arizona Game & Fish Department to provide protection to fish that will eventually be re-introduced into the lake after water levels rise. (See attached photo.)

Restoration of the Lake included draining all water, sediment sampling, construction of sediment control structures, and the excavation and removal of contaminated sediment to a nearby consolidation cell just north of Lower Thumb Picnic Area. This consolidation cell will remain closed to the public.

Draining the lake also provided an opportunity to remove invasive, non-native bullfrogs, which prey on native frogs, fish, reptiles and small mammals. The Arizona Game and Fish Department, Coronado National Forest, Sky Island Alliance, University of Arizona, U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Geological Survey, and others worked together to eliminate bullfrogs in the project area.

For further information, the public should contact the Nogales Ranger District office at 520-281-2296.

NOTE: The public is reminded that washes must be crossed to access Pena Blanca Lake. Visitors should be aware of local weather conditions and flash flood warnings, including forecasted weather conditions associated with the approach of Hurricane Jimena.

The Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at Washington State University has confirmed that a recent carp die-off at Lake Havasu is from the Koi Herpes Virus, which also killed carp in Lake Mohave in May, said Arizona Game and Fish biologists.

Koi Herpes Virus (KHV), which can impact carp as water temperatures warm in late spring, impacts gill function and can lead to suffocation and/or secondary infections. While there were bacterial issues as well, the lab tests show KHV as the primary cause of the die-off.

According to health experts, this virus is localized to specific fish species and does not pose a human health risk. However, Game and Fish biologists recommend you avoid handling dead fish or take precautions, such as wearing protective gloves.

“As a common-sense precaution, we also recommend you not fish for carp right now along the lower Colorado River, but instead focus on fishing for other species,” said Russell Engel, the regional fisheries biologist in the Game and Fish Yuma office.

Engel added that this fish virus appears to be working its way down the river. Infected fish that don’t die become carriers of the virus and can spread it to healthy carp. “We suspect it will eventually work its way down to the Yuma area and into canal systems fed by the Colorado River.”

Native Fish Cam at Bubbling Ponds honored with Top 10 Cam Award

BUBBLING PONDS – The intriguing “Native Fish Cam” at the Bubbling Ponds Fish Hatchery operated by the Arizona Game and Fish Department has been honored with Earth Cam’s Top 10 Cam award.

“We have installed an underwater camera at our Bubbling Ponds Fish Hatchery near Sedona, which is where we raise unique native fish like the endangered humpback chub that is found in the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon,” said Brian Ference, the webmaster for Game and Fish.

For a journey below the surface to see these amazing native fish that are uniquely adapted to aquatic habitats in the Southwest, simply click on http://www.azgfd.gov/fishcam or just visit the department’s Web site at www.azgfd.gov.

The Native Fish Cam is routinely moved, so at any time you might see Colorado pikeminnow (that can reach up to 100 pounds), roundtail chub (found in Fossil Creek), razorback sucker, bonytail chub, and many other native fish species, most of which are endangered.

The goal of the Bubbling Ponds Fish Hatchery, which is adjacent to the Page Springs Fish Hatchery in Cornville just downstream from Sedona along Oak Creek, is to propagate these fish for reintroduction and repatriation projects.

The Bubbling Ponds fish hatchery has 13 large ponds as well as numerous 6-foot diameter circular fiberglass tanks. The ponds are used for rearing the large fish native to the Colorado River and the fiberglass tanks are used for research and rearing small endangered fishes such as spikedace that were once found throughout the Verde River.

Once you are viewing the Native Fish Cam, you will also find accompanying information on this state’s amazing native fish species that will intrigue and enchant you. Most native fish are either imperiled or extirpated, but others — such as the Apache trout — have encouraging comeback stories. Native fish hatcheries such as this one typically play a crucial role in recovery efforts.

This intriguing Fish Cam is just another in a series of improvements the Game and Fish Department has made to connect or re-connect with outdoor enthusiasts, but to also reach and enthuse new audiences.

The department has redesigned and revamped most of its E-news products to make them more cyberspace reader friendly, but has also become a major player in the world of outdoor blogging. “Our Fishing Blog has become very popular, with lots of anglers chattering it up, posting pictures, and sharing how-to or where-to information,” Ference said.

There is also a online interactive map showing all the fishing lakes, rivers and streams of the state, with lots of detailed information on each one. “In the first five months of operation, this interactive fishing map registered a half-million hits,” Ference pointed out.

The department’s online videos, such as its award-winning series on PBS called “Arizona Wildlife Views,” have exceeded the million-viewer mark.

Recently, the quail (the animal depicted on the department’s logo) recently entered the Twitter world as well – you can now witness the quail twittering just about every day. You can also visit the Quail on Facebook.

Operation Dry Water is a national campaign that was created to detect and remove impaired boaters from waters across the nation. It is organized by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and the U.S. Coast Guard, and it will focus on enforcing Operating/Boating Under the Influence (OUI or BUI) laws June 26-28, 2009. <ins datetime="2009-06-09T13:53" cite="mailto:TGuillen">

</ins>Among the many lakes and rivers across America, one of the most dangerous waterways west of the Mississippi is the Colorado River. As part of this national effort, Arizona, California and Nevada have joined forces to partake in interagency OUI checkpoints, saturation patrols, and outreach along the 233-mile system.

“The Colorado River system is a massive undertaking to enforce,” said Kevin Bergersen, Arizona’s boating law administrator. “However, it is important that every agency does their share since a significant number of alcohol-related accidents occur on the Colorado River,” he said. “These checkpoints remove dangerous boaters from the river enforcing the .08 Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) throughout, making it safe for everyone,” he said.

“We couldn’t do it without the help of local and state law enforcement agencies,” said Raynor Tsuneyoshi, California’s boating law administrator. “Our partnership with Arizona, Nevada and the counties, including the support of the U.S. Coast Guard, enables us to cover more territory making the river much safer.”

The primary purpose of the operation is to detect boat operators who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and to provide boating safety education and outreach to all boaters contacted as part of this effort.

KINGMAN, Ariz. – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and the Arizona Game and Fish Department – with assistance from Prescott Flycasters, The Nature Conservancy, and other volunteers are beginning a native fish restoration effort at Stillman Lake starting this week.

The ‘lake’ is actually a large pool of the Upper Verde River, and will undergo restoration and enhancement of native fish, including the razorback sucker, roundtail chub, and other native species.

“The Verde River, including its assemblage of unusually adapted desert fish, is uniquely Arizona,” said Shaula Hedwall, FWS biologist. “Restoring a source population of Verde fish species is a milestone in making the river whole again and achieving species recovery.”

“This is an important step in future management of native species in the Verde River,” said Andy Clark, fisheries program manager for the Game and Fish Kingman office. “It’s exciting to be a part of this effort.

“The lake will provide a refuge for native fish following removal of non-native predators and serve as a source of native fish for downstream areas.”

Clark explained that through recurring flood events, larval and young native species will disperse downstream throughout their historical range.

“Stillman Lake currently harbors common carp and flathead catfish, which limit native species recruitment and survival. Once these species are removed, native fish will have a chance to grow and this ‘sanctuary’ will provide a better opportunity for survival downstream following high flows,” Clark said.

Stillman Lake, part of the Game and Fish Department’s Upper Verde River Wildlife Area and The Nature Conservancy’s Verde River Springs Preserve south of Paulden, does not attract many anglers in relation to other regional and statewide locations for sport fish recreation.

“It’s ideal for a restoration effort such as this,” Clark said. “Those who enjoy sport fishing aren’t going to be heavily impacted by this effort. In fact, those who use this area should be excited about the prospect of angling for roundtail chub, also known as Verde trout.”

Agency personnel and local angler volunteers will make an effort to salvage native and sport fish prior to chemically removing remaining non-natives. Salvaged native fish will be moved downstream from Stillman Lake while sport fish will be relocated.

Rotenone will be used to eliminate any remaining fish. The chemical is short lived and will not impact wildlife, human populations, or fish downstream from the lake.

“The mention of chemicals is often viewed negatively,” Clark stated. “However, rotenone is important in the removal of non-native fish. This project can’t be successful without the removal of non-native predatory fish and this was determined to be the safest and most effective way to remove them.”

The lake will be closed during the treatment period, which will be about three days. Reintroduction of native species will occur after monitoring efforts show the removal of non-native fish was successful.

The agencies met with local angler groups and conducted a public meeting, and the FWS has completed an environmental assessment and approval for the project.

More tests to come, but virus primary suspect

People visiting and living in Lake Havasu have been witnessing the sight of dead carp at the lake, and the problem isn’t likely to quickly vanish.

Arizona Game and Fish Department biologists believe the Koi Herpes Virus (KHV) that killed thousands of carp in Lake Mohave, is the same culprit for the die-off at Lake Havasu. However, there will likely be additional testing next week to confirm this fact. A timeline for final results from the testing is unknown.

The KHV – which can impact carp as water temperatures warm in late spring – impacts gill function and can lead to suffocation and/or secondary infections in carp, koi, and goldfish. While there were some bacterial issues with the Lake Mohave carp, lab tests from the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab indicated KHV was the primary cause of the die-off.

KHV is not a threat to public health, and it does not affect other wildlife. Recent rumors of other species dying off are unfounded at this point in time.

“Just like with any living thing, fish die,” said Zen Mocarski, information and education program manager with the Game and Fish Kingman office. “There have been other species found along the shoreline, but those numbers represent only the normal amount that would be found at any given time.”

KHV is viewed as the likely cause of the die-off at Lake Havasu because carp remain the only species impacted and Lake Havasu is downriver from Lake Mohave, where this event originated. Locations downriver from Lake Havasu may be impacted as this virus runs its course through the river system.

“While this is not viewed as a public safety threat, anglers should probably focus on fishing for other species the lake has to offer, and people handling the dead fish along the shoreline should take precautions, such as wearing gloves,” said Andy Clark, fisheries program manager for the Game and Fish Kingman office. “This is the case when handling anything that’s died.”

The die-off, Clark said, is not associated with a water quality issue, which would have impacted all species of fish in the lake.

In the middle of May, carp began washing up on shorelines along Lake Mohave and within a week the numbers began to multiply. Shortly afterward, a small number of carp were found dead at Lake Havasu. That number ballooned in recent days and dead fish have littered the shoreline, with the locations driven primarily by prevailing winds.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Arizona Game and Fish biologists have monitored the shoreline at Lake Havasu and have observed the same traits associated with the die-off at Lake Mohave: white spots along the sides of the gills and a lack of blood in the gills.

While the die-off at Lake Mohave has slowed and provided National Park Service an opportunity to clean dead fish from developed areas such as Cottonwood Cove and Katherine’s Landing, the duration of the die-off at Lake Havasu remains unknown primarily because of water temperatures.

“There’s really no way to know for sure,” Clark said. “I hesitate to make predictions with an issue for which we have no control. Even after the peak of the die-off has passed, it’s highly probable dead carp will continue to wash up on shorelines in smaller numbers.”

Clark added that there’s little that can be done to stop the die-off.

“There’s no method in place to change the water temperature in a short period of time that might slow or stop this event.”

This means residents and visitors have had to deal with an unpleasant sight and smell.

“There’s little that can be done when we start talking about these numbers,” Mocarski said. “While BLM and Arizona State Parks have worked to keep their segments of the shoreline clean, more carp are washing up each day.

“This situation is unique in its scope. My guess is that this will follow a similar course as Lake Mohave, but there’s really no way to tell because water temperatures are such a critical aspect with this disease.”

For fishing information, please check the Game and Fish website, www.azgfd.gov for the latest fishing report.

KINGMAN, Ariz. – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and the Arizona Game and Fish Department – with assistance from Prescott Flycasters, The Nature Conservancy, and other volunteers – are set to begin a native fish restoration effort at Stillman Lake.

On-the-ground efforts can proceed following a 45-day appeal period that concludes 5 p.m., July 27, 2009.

Those wishing to view the restoration plan should visit the FWS website at http://www.fws.gov/southwest/es/arizona/or call (928) 226-0614, ext. 203.

Arizona Game and Fish Department fisheries biologists visited Lake Mohave shoreline areas to examine the extent of the die-off, with the dead numbering in the thousands.

The gills of the carp had white spots along the sides and lacked blood.

“The lab test results are close to what we expected,” Clark said. “We recognized the need to get a sample, but it wasn’t that simple. We needed a live specimen, and carp we found close to the surface were dying shortly after capture.

“The problem was, we suspected this to be viral, and a virus dies when the host dies.”

After Clark managed to secure several live carp, they were shipped to Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab (WADDL) for testing. The results came back late Friday afternoon.

While Lake Mohave remains the primary area of this die-off, there have been several recent reports at Lake Havasu. However, while that number remains low, it is possible KHV is the cause.

If a die-off begins at Lake Havasu, Clark said there’s little that can be done to stop it.

“There’s no method in place to change the water temperature in a short period of time that might prevent this,” he explained. “However, I want to remind everyone that we have no confirmation that an event of the same scale will occur on Lake Havasu. Only time will tell.”

As for a possible end to the die-off at Lake Mohave, Clark is uncertain, but believes we’ve already seen the worst.

Get the tackle ready and load up new fishing line on the reel — there is still one more free fishing day for Arizona on June 13 so you can celebrate National Fishing and Boating Week.

This is a great opportunity for kids to take their parents fishing, or for you to introduce a friend, neighbor or co-worker to this fun outdoor experience.

“The mild weather this past week has really turned on the bite in both the high country and desert lakes, so don’t miss out on this prime opportunity,” said Fishing Report Editor Rory Aikens. “And kids (or adults), get your dad out as a pre-Father’s Day outing. He’ll remember it fondly for years to come.”

Check the Game and Fish Department’s Web site at www.azgfd.gov for the latest fishing report so you can best plan your fishing outing. Remember that bag limits and other regulations must be observed on Free Fishing Day.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department will sponsor a number of Free Fishing Day clinics/events. Loaner fishing rods and bait are provided for free at most of these venues. Times and locations are:

There is hike-in lake with a steep, challenging trail.
The lake is open to artificial lure and fly only. Trout between 10 to 14 may not be possessed The lake is open to electric trolling motors and /or up to 10 hp. gas motors.

BEAR CANYON LAKE — Fishing is was pretty good during the Memorial weekend, with some float tube anglers doing exceptionally well. The lake is full. The lake was stocked last week with catchable size rainbow trout. There are also larger hold-over trout.

Enjoyed the rainbow bite Saturday morning at Bear Canyon from my float tube using
semi-seal leach with a glo-bug dropper. One was plump but only about 12-13 inches. Maybe a holdover, maybe just
a plump stocker. The rest were stockers.
Thanks, Brian

BLACK CANYON LAKE — Fishing is good. Has been stocked with rainbow trout. All Forest roads are open to the lake. Fished from Kinder Crossing up towards Blue Ridge. Kept one fat feisty wild 11 inch rainbow on ultralight spinning with 2 lb test. Full tail and fins, pink flesh, stomach full of grasshopper and baby crayfish. Large aggressive crayfish tried to steal it from stringer. Some fingerlings in the larger pools. Road to trail head rutted out worse than usual. Beautiful scenery, too few catchables for this perennial. Maybe still not drought recovered. Could use some Browns to eat out the crayfish infestation.

KNOLL LAKE – This lake is full and accessible and has been stocked. Knoll is often good for early-season holdover trout, but don’t expect great numbers.

Fishing has been very good for boat anglers, and fair to good for shore anglers. The best bite has been at first and last light, or when the storm clouds start pilling up. Fishing is good, with many anglers catching limits, especially those fishing from boats. The lake is full. Willow Springs also has plenty of larger holdover trout, plus smallmouth and largemouth bass. There are even some crappies here. Fish the stickups using 4-inch worms or lizards. Drop-shotted Robo worms can sometimes produce a bonanza of bass, trout and crappie.

I fished solo on this trip to Willow springs on May 13th, and what a great trip it was !!!!!!! I boated 46 trout (mostly catch-and-release), 12 smallies, and 2 crappie. Trolling real slow with Rebel plugs/crankbaits (dark colors). Arrived at first light, and it was non-stop action !!!!! I met some real nice people on the lake. You have to LOVE the Rim Lakes. Thanks again to all at AZ. Game & Fish !!!!!
Went out to Willow Springs Lake yesterday with the canoe, looking for some of those nice holdovers!
Got my limit of nice, long, fat rainbows in about 2 1/2 hours, using half of a dilly worm behind baby cowbells. All were between 8″ – 14″. Trolled them very, very slowly with the canoe. Also caught a small guy on a small gold KastMaster tipped with a couple red glittered salmon eggs.
Beautiful day out! Didn’t get to see any Bald Eagles yet though.
Thanks!
This lake was stocked last week and is scheduled to be stocked again this coming week. Fishing is good for the stockers, with some larger hold-over trout still be caught at times.

There is a small area (well signed) on the eastern end of the lake is that closed due to nesting bald eagles. Please respect the closure – it should not interfere with your fishing. This also means that the nesting eagles are aggressively foraging for fish at Woods Canyon and at nearby Willow Springs, so take along your binoculars, it’s a treat. You might even see an exciting wildlife drama unfold when a bald eagle tries to take a fish away from an osprey.

Tim C.: I went to Woods Canyon last Saturday for my first trout fishing outing ever. I only had my first cast in the water for 3 minutes when I pulled out my first of two 10-inch Rainbow Trout. The bites came slower as the day wore on but, I can’t wait to go back!

There were more good reports from night anglers at Roosevelt and Alamo last week. Minnows and green or white Slab Daddy jigs seem to be the ticket. One group of Slab Hunters at Rosey boated about 41 and another group got 20 or so all of which were over 2 lbs! I also heard a good report on Bartlett from a guy trolling in the morning.

With a full moon on its way you will need more light in the water to attract baitfish. There are a number a quality lights on the market ranging from $20 to $150. Green light does the best but during a full moon it is a good idea to add a white light. Bass Pro Shops and other local tackle stores sell green florescent tube lights for under $25 and they work great, especially when you use more than one. There are also larger tube lights you can find on the internet. In my opinion the best light out there is the “Aurora” from www.jumpingchollajigs.com. They are small, kick out a ton of light and use very little power.

So let’s go over some basic night fishing techniques.

First you should start by anchoring up in about 30 to 35 feet of water in a cove or near a point. Then put your lights in the water and get them fired up. This will get the food chain moving. You should start to see zooplankton (tiny krill like critters) within a few minutes. Zooplankton will attract shad minnows (baitfish) and the shad will attract the predators like bass and Crappie. If you don’t have shad around your lights within about 45 minutes, move and try another spot.

Start by fishing with a minnow on a #4 aberdeen hook and a #7 split shot about 5 to 6 feet under a bobber. I prefer slip bobbers but any will work.
Keep your bait just outside the light ring as much as possible. That’s where the predators are waiting. It may be necessary to fish deeper but start shallow and slowly work down until you find what depth the Crappie are at.
Remember, Crappie only feed up! If your bait is too deep you will not catch Crappie even if there are dozens around you. If your going to make a mistake, error on the shallow side.

You can also work a jig; this is where a longer rod will really help you. It will help you keep your jig out away from the boat towards the edge of the light ring. I fish a 9′6″ Wally Marshall Pro Series rod in medium light; it also makes a great trolling rod. Again, start shallow and jig your bait vertically or swim it slowly. Feather jigs like the Slab Daddys work great for this. And a little shad favored spray on scent will help also.

I won’t be going out this week but I’ll keep the reports coming the best I can. Also, I’m working the opening shift at Bass Pro all week so if you need more help or want to share some info, please come see me.

Good luck with your fishing, be safe out on the water and don’t forget to share your outdoor experiences with a kid. Fishing is a great sport for young ones and will give them memories that last a life time.

Wildlife biologists are asking any interested volunteers to meet them at the lake on Saturday, June 6, to assist in removing shoreline garbage and monofilament fishing line that can end up in nests and fatally entangle chicks and adults.

“This is a great opportunity for people to get outside and do something worthwhile for wildlife, while enjoying one of the most scenic areas in Arizona. As an added bonus, June 6 is National Free Fishing Day, so volunteers can bring their angling gear along and pursue some trout after the cleanup project,” says Dan Groebner, nongame biologist in the department’s Pinetop regional office.

The cleanup will begin at 9 a.m. at the Woods Canyon Lake store. Participants will be provided garbage bags and areas of shoreline to cover. Volunteers should bring water and sunscreen. As an added feature, biologists will also present a bald eagle and osprey natural history program starting at 1 p.m. at the Woods Canyon Lake amphitheater. The lake is situated atop the Mogollon Rim in central Arizona, about 5 miles north of State Highway 260 between Payson and Heber.

“People should bring binoculars and a camera as there will likely be opportunities to view osprey and eagles, as well as other native wildlife,” says Groebner. “We will not approach any nests, as this is a very sensitive season for the birds, but sometimes they show off their excellent fishing skills in front of frustrated anglers.”

Funding for this program is made available through the department’s Heritage Fund. Started in 1990, the Heritage Fund was established by Arizona voters to further conservation efforts in the state. The Arizona Game and Fish Department uses Heritage Fund dollars to manage more than 800 native wildlife species, including threatened and endangered species; to help urban residents coexist with wildlife; to educate children and the public about the environment and wildlife conservation; and, to create new opportunities for outdoor recreation like wildlife viewing.

The Heritage Fund provides critical funding to the department and benefits communities statewide.

For more information on the cleanup, contact Groebner at the Pinetop office at (928) 367-4281.

Dudes (and dudettes), want some cool tips on how to take your parents fishing?
With a little help from a 1st grade class at Stetson Hills Elementary in Phoenix, here are some tips from kids themselves.
Michael said first he would do his chores, then ask his dad to go fishing, and then, “We would get in the truck. Finally, we are fishing.”
Casey also opted for the chore strategy, but followed up by getting the fishing poles ready and putting them in the car for mom and dad.
Sierra knows how to play on her parents’ heart strings or work on their sympathy. “First I would say I love to go fishing. Next I would beg to go fishing.”
Vincent likes using a little psychology spiced with the sympathy ploy and a lot of perseverance. “First I would tell them it can be a vacation. Next I would get on the floor and beg. Finally, I would keep asking over and over again.”
Cole opted for a unique approach. First I will by them whine. Then I will make them drive me there. Finally, I will go fishing.”
Christian’s strategy was employing food and whine – first making breakfast and then whining to go fishing.

Here are a dozen other cool things us kids can do to get mom and dad for a groovy day of fishing.

1. Convince your daddy to buy mommy a new fishing pole, and then tell her you’ll teach her how to catch fish (even offer to bait her hooks).

2. Ask your daddy about the biggest fish he ever caught. After listening to the long story, say, “Gee pops, I wish you would show me how to catch one like that!”

3. When at the grocery store with mommy or daddy, load the grocery cart with lots of great stuff for a picnic at the lake – don’t forget the bait. Shrimp, hot dogs, anchovies and cheese are always good choices. If you don’t catch fish, they can be used as super toppings for pizza or Nachos.

4. Put a five dollar bill on a hook and drag it across the family room floor – that is one way to get your parents away from the TV and out to the lake for some fishing. Maybe make it a ten-spot if you are reeling in a big allowance.

5. Give your mommy a big hug and tell her how “pretty” and “young” she always looks in her favorite sun hat while fishing.

6. Record some of the most exciting fishing shows on TV and start playing them early on a sunny Saturday morning when your parents are just waking up, especially if they smell fresh coffee brewing.

7. Call your grandpa on the phone and ask him when was the last time he took your dad (or mom) fishing or camping, and ask, “Gramps, isn’t it time again?”

Hey kids, if your parents didn’t get a fishing license yet this year, you can still take them fishing for free during the first two Saturdays of June, advise Arizona Game and Fish Department officials.

Arizona’s Free Fishing Days celebrating National Fishing and Boating Week are on two consecutive Saturdays, June 6 and 13.

“With most of our lakes full for a second year in a row thanks to excellent winter rains and snow pack, this is a phenomenal time to get your parents out fishing,” said Rory Aikens, the fishing report editor for Game and Fish. “It’s up to you kids to make sure your parents don’t suffer from an outdoor recreation deficiency.”

Check the Game and Fish Department’s Web site at www.azgfd.gov for the latest fishing report so you can best plan your fishing outing. The Web site also lists the latest fishing clinics in case your parents need some basic tutelage on the fine art of angling.

“Remember kids, at any time of year you can sign your parents up for any of our fishing clinics even if they don’t have a fishing license. Those who are registered for a fishing clinic don’t need a license during the hours and location of the clinic,” Aikens advised.

For more tips on how to take your parents fishing, see the accompanying article (condensed) that appeared in the May-June 2008 edition of Arizona Wildlife Views magazine.
Dudes: Want to take your parents fishing?

By Rory (old fogey) and Joshua (young kid) Aikens

8. Find a fun fishing photo and send it to your parent’s cell phones or laptops with a note, “Wish we were there. I love you!”

9. Download all the fishing songs you can find on the Web and put them on your parents IPODs to play when they go jogging, working out in the gym or just chillin’ around the pool.

10. Convince your favorite aunt or uncle (or grandparent) to challenge your parents to a family fishing tournament, with the loser paying for all the hot dogs to eat at the lake.

11. Get out your box of crayons and draw a picture of your family fishing with a note at the top that says, “I love fishing with mommy and daddy,” then use some magnets and place it on the refrigerator door.

12. Before your mom and dad wake up, get the fishing gear ready next to the front door and maybe even pack a picnic (even a loaf of bread and some PB&J will work).

Once you get them hooked on the fishing idea, be prepared to help them choose a bodacious place to hang. Here are some suggestions.

If you only have a morning or afternoon available, take your parents to one of the popular urban lakes. These fun fishing holes are especially great if you have younger brothers and sisters. The younger ones (or dad) can get bored with fishing. Most urban lakes are located in city parks with playgrounds and other fun stuff.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department Region 6 Fisheries Program hosted an overnight fishing and camping clinic for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Central Arizona on April 25 and 26 at Saguaro Lake.

Participants were boated to a campsite at Bagley Flat and caught lots of bluegills. Nine little brothers and one little sister participated along with their adult brothers and sister, fondly known as their “Bigs.”

A barbecue of hot dogs and hamburgers was provided and S’mores were a big hit at the campfire that night! We made breakfast burritos in the morning.

Thanks to the generous donation from United Arizona Anglers Foundation (UAAF) we were able to provide rods and reels for each child to keep as well as the food for the outing.

Plano also donated tackle boxes for each child and we provided tackle to fill the tackle boxes. The Forest Service made sure the campsite and bathrooms were clean. Thanks to a retired Fisheries Supervisor who told us where the fish were and the depth to fish; it was truly a team effort. The bluegill bite was on and the kids were catching bluegill left and right using worms and mealworms.
