November fishing is excellent at Urban Program lakes with catfish, bluegill, bass and rainbow trout stockings all taking place this month. The rainbow trout stocking season is scheduled to begin Monday, November 16 at all Urban Fishing Program waters. Fishing should be good to excellent for anglers using scented dough baits (such as PowerBait), worms or small trout lures. Trout stockings will continue every two weeks from November to March. All lakes were recently stocked with bluegill and action is good for these feisty fighters. Catfish action is fair to good after four successful fall stockings have loaded up the lakes. Last week a Tempe angler caught a huge channel catfish from Kiwanis Lake that weighed in at 13.1 pounds and was over 30 inches long. Trout fishing is good to excellent at Green Valley lakes in Payson. Best action for trout is coming on PowerBait, salmon eggs, worms and small spinners.

Trout averaging from 11-12 inches will be stocked at rates of 80-100 fish per lake surface acre for Urban Lakes and at lower rates for Urban Ponds. Fish deliveries will occur throughout the day starting from early morning well into the afternoon. Trout stockings will continue at two week intervals throughout the next four months. A total of over 12,000 trout from two Colorado trout producers will be delivered to all 21 waters in one day. With the colder temperatures at Payson’s Green Valley Lakes, trout stockings already started in October and will continue every other week. Remember, daily bag and possession limits for trout at Urban Lakes are four fish per person for licensed anglers and two fish for unlicensed juveniles under the age of 14. Trout limits at Urban Ponds are two fish for licensed anglers and one fish for youth.

NOTE: Twice each year, the Urban Fishing Program shares with you the specific stocking date. We do this in the fall when we switch from catfish to trout stockings, and again in the spring when we switch back to catfish. For the other stocking dates throughout the year, only the week of stocking is announced to the public (Monday thru Saturday).

The annual stocking of largemouth bass is scheduled to occur in November with over 8,000 fish on order. Bass will be from 6-9 inches in length—below the 13-inch minimum legal size. Younger bass are stocked to help rebuild the resident bass populations in our lakes. They are not stocked for anglers to catch and keep like catfish, bluegill or trout. Regulations require that anglers carefully release these juvenile bass unharmed back into the water so they can grow to catchable size in the future.

Catfishing at Urban lakes continues to be good to excellent with fall stockings well underway. Not much change in the top baits for channel cats: shrimp, stink baits and hot dogs. Activity is best in the evening and early morning with cooler temperatures making the cats active during mid-day periods as well. Bluegill and bass are biting well in the early mornings as they seek to fatten up before winter sets in. The special fall stocking of bluegill is scheduled for the week of October 26-31, so make sure to take the kids, grandkids or a friend. Earthworms, mealworms or a piece of hot dog on a small hook under a small bobber will keep you and the youngsters busy catching bluegill. The Green Valley Lakes (Payson) will receive their first delivery of rainbow trout on October 20, kicking off an eight month trout stocking season. Fishing should be excellent for the 11-14 inch trout. Best trout baits include Powerbait, small spinners and lures, and worms. Green Valley anglers continue to have success catching bass, bluegill and crappie.

Payson residents and visitors can welcome back the trout to beautiful Green Valley Park on Tuesday, October 20. Over 900 Colorado-grown rainbow trout will be delivered to kick off the trout stocking season that features 11-14 inch rainbow trout delivered every two weeks. Fall is a wonderful time to visit the rim country, see the colors, and relax and fish along the grassy shorelines of this popular urban fishery just a mile west of Highway 87. The fish stocking program at Green Valley is different from all other Urban Fishing Program waters. Rainbow trout are the only species stocked by the Department during an eight month season that starts in mid October and continues through early May. No catfish, bass or sunfish are stocked at Green Valley, however good populations of bass, crappie and sunfish can be found in these highly productive lakes.

Trout can be caught on small spinners and spoons, by fly fishermen using nymphs or wet flies, and by baits such as scented dough baits, worms or salmon eggs. Remember to use lighter line in the 2-6 pound range, smaller hooks and a minimal amount of weight. Limits on trout are 4 per day for licensed anglers and 2 trout for children under age 14.

Fishing for catfish is good to excellent now that the fall stockings have resumed. Catfish have been biting throughout the day. While the majority of stocked catfish are caught in the first five days of stocking, anglers are still catching cats 1-2 weeks later at a slower rate. Top baits for catfish have been stink baits, shrimp and worms fished on the bottom in the deeper lake sections. Use smaller sinkers and 6-8 pound test line to get more hookups. Fishing for bluegill is good along the shorelines in 4-8 feet of water. There have been some good reports of largemouth bass being caught and released in the early morning hours by anglers using spinnerbaits and Texas rigged plastic worms. At Green Valley Lakes (Payson) fishing for bass, bluegill and crappie is very good with some nice 2-4 pound bass showing up. Fish stockings (trout only) at Green Valley will resume the week of October 19-24.

No doubt about it, the first 3-5 days after a fish stocking offer the best catch rates for catfish. But it is a serious mistake to think that “all the fish have been caught out.” Time after time, Game and Fish biologists witness, and get reports, of anglers catching limits of catfish from one week to three months since the last stocking. Instead of catching a couple fish an hour, it may take a couple hours to catch a fish. But persistence will pay off. After a few days of leaving the easy life as a hatchery raised and heavily fed fish, catfish begin to develop “wild” behaviors in their new urban lake homes. These wary fish have grown “street smart” and are not easily fooled by conventional methods, or overanxious anglers. After monitoring catfish stockings for over 20 years, biologists have determined that 80% of stocked catfish are caught within the first week of stocking. That leaves 20% of the fish to carry over into the weeks and months ahead. On September 23, the day of the first fall catfish stocking, biologists encountered an angler with a limit of four catfish taken BEFORE the stocking truck arrived. Those catfish had been in the lake at least 12 weeks since the final spring catfish stocking the end of June. These reports are quite regular.

There are also many other species of fish waiting to be caught in the urban waters. Bluegill and redear sunfish are abundant in most lakes and can provide rapid action for anglers that target them. Try meal worms on a size 10 hook, fished under a small pencil bobber using 2-6 pound test line. Largemouth bass are present in all the lakes, with the better populations found in the larger urban waters. Specialized bass techniques and approaches have been developed by urban bass anglers. This group of avid catch and release anglers tend to be rather tight lipped about their bass fishing tips. In the past week, an angler reported excellent fishing for crappie up to 12 inches. A couple of the urban lakes have yellow bass populations that peak and ebb from year to year. Even the common carp can provide great sport for anglers fishing corn or dough balls and the smallest of sinkers to hold the bait in place. Carp from 3-10 pounds provide quite a thrill. So take up the challenge to modify your fishing strategies to catch some of the other, abundant fish found in the urban waters.

Fishing for catfish should be good to excellent once the fall stocking program kicks off the week of September 21-26. Orders have been placed for regular stockings of 1.5-2 pound channel catfish into all 20 Urban Program lakes in both the Tucson and Phoenix areas. Lakes will be stocked at rates of 35-70 catfish per acre every two weeks through early November. Catfish bite well on worms, stink baits, shrimp or hot dogs fished on the bottom. Mornings and evenings are the best times as catfish prefer to feed under dim or dark conditions. Fishing for bluegill is good along the shorelines in 4-8 feet of water. Try mealworms under a small, thin bobber for great action. As lake temperatures fall below 78 degrees, expect better action for largemouth bass, especially in the early morning periods. Try finesse plastics rigged drop shot or Texas style for the bass and mix it up with small crankbaits, soft jerkbaits or spinnerbaits. At Green Valley Lakes (Payson) fishing for bass, bluegill and crappie is fair and should improve by the end of September as lake temperatures cool and fish activity increases. Fish stockings (trout only) at Green Valley will resume the week of October 19-24. At all lakes remember to release any of the weed eating white amur right away so they can go back to munching on the nuisance water weeds.

Eric Swanson, Urban Fisheries Program Manager, sees the growth trend as “Lots of people recognizing the excellent value of this high quality and affordable outdoor fishing experience close to home. It fits right in with our urban program motto; if people can’t get to the fish, we bring fish to the people.”

The consistent, reliable delivery of quality fish throughout the year creates fun, family-friendly fishing opportunity at an affordable price. Urban Fishing licenses are just $18.50 and can be purchased from over 320 license dealers and sporting goods stores statewide.

Fish stockings, featuring channel catfish, will resume during the week of September 21-26 at all 20 Urban Fishing Program waters in the greater Phoenix and Tucson areas. The fall catfish stockings represent the “second half” of the spring/fall catfish delivery season that included a two month summer “halftime” break from stockings. Over 14,000 pounds of 1.5-2 pound catfish will be transported by our fish contractor all the way from Arkansas in specially designed hauling trucks. The farm-raised catfish have had a good summer growing season and most fish should be in the two pound plus range. Anglers might want to put some fresh line on their reels since the larger, hard fighting cats can put equipment to the test and bust old line. Game and Fish biologists will accompany each lake delivery to ensure that all stocking operations run smoothly and successfully, and that all fish pass our high inspection standards for excellent condition and health. All lakes were recently checked for compliance with our water quality stocking guidelines and all lakes passed inspection. The fall catfish stocking season includes a total of four stockings at two week intervals through early November. Stockings will occur on random days during the designated stocking week (Mondays through Saturday). This alternating week schedule will only change if fish delivery problems occur (we have a 99% “on-time” delivery success) or conditions at an individual lake are unsuitable for stocking (for example high pH levels). Best baits for catfish are worms, stink/dough bait, shrimp or hot dogs. Catfish bag limits are 4 fish at the Urban Lakes or 2 fish at the Urban Ponds.

Fishing is slow at all Urban Fishing waters statewide through the summer no stocking period. Fish stockings will resume at all Phoenix and Tucson area Urban waters the week of September 21-26. Catfish and bass have been tough to catch with the higher lake temperatures making them lazy and sluggish. Fishing activity will begin to pick up as soon as nighttime temperatures dip into the 70’s and lake temperatures reach the low 80s. Fishing has been good all summer for the plentiful bluegills that frequent the shoreline areas in search of food. Mealworms fished on the bottom or a few feet under a bobber will catch sunfish throughout the day, especially if anglers use smaller bobbers and light line in the 2-4 pound range. Some catfish and bass are being caught, but it takes persistence and some good timing in the early morning and evening hours. At Green Valley lakes (Payson), anglers are having some success for crappie, bluegill and bass. Smaller nightcrawlers (Dillys) and mealworms are working 4-6 feet under the surface. At all lakes remember to release any of the weed eating white amur right away so they can go back out and munch on the weeds.

In 1985 what started out as a small fishing program at three lakes in Scottsdale and Tucson has now grown into one of the largest urban fishing programs in the nation. The year 2010 will represent the 25th anniversary of Arizona’s Urban Fishing Program (UFP) and Game and Fish is planning some fun and innovative changes to celebrate and help more people learn about the UFP. All lake maps and park information are being updated in the UFP brochure and website. More emphasis will be placed on identifying family friendly amenities at the parks. Plans are in place to add exciting information like video clips to the Department’s web site and create an Urban Fishing Facebook. Over 5,000 anglers are expected to be interviewed at the lakes in 2010 as part of a one year survey. These anglers will receive tokens of appreciation for their participation and have a chance to chat with urban fish biologists. New photo and fish catch contests are being developed that allow anglers to share their fishing success stories and receive special recognition for their achievements. More incentive fish stockings are planned to include some trophy size trout and catfish. A special edition, UFP brochure in being designed to provide more fishing information in an easier to read and enjoyable format. Stay tuned for more to come and get ready to join us in celebrating 25 years of success.

This is the busiest time of year for white amurs to graze on nuisance aquatic plants at urban waters. Plants are abundant and growing fast. White amur, or grass carp, are like “aquatic cows” feeding on plant growth across the bottoms of our lakes. Vegetarians by nature, the white amur can feed on 1-3 pounds of weed material a day. They are a vital biological tool to browse on plant growth and help keep our lakes clean and fishable. Cities spend thousands of dollars a year to buy the sterile amur and put them out to “pasture” in the lakes. The white amur can live up to 10 years and reach weights over 40 pounds. In their lifetime they can consume over a ton of weeds. This biological weed control is a better environmental alternative than the use of expensive weed control chemicals, requiring certified applicators and repeated treatments every year. While the amur prefer plants, they will occasionally bite on worms, corn, bread and even lures. Legally, white amur must be at least 30 inches long to keep. Anglers are reminded that amur are in the lakes to help clean up your fishing waters. Please release them unharmed so they can go about their lawn mowing business.

Fishing has tapered off at all Urban Fishing waters statewide now that the spring fish stocking season has ended. Fish stockings will resume in mid September once temperatures start to cool once again. Fishing is still fair at lakes as many catfish still remain, bluegill and other sunfish species are still plentiful, and bass are still lurking around. To be successful, anglers may have to try some new baits and methods, mixed with some persistence and patience to have regular success (see above article). With water temperatures creeping towards 90 degrees, the resident fish are becoming more lethargic. Fish activity is best after dark or in the early morning during these summer months. The usual catfish baits such as worms, shrimp, and dough/stink baits are good to try, but this is a good time to experiment and combine baits or mix up a new catfish bait concoction you discovered on the internet. At Green Valley lakes (Payson) the best fishing is for crappie, bluegill, bass and catfish. Try small marabou jigs or curly tail grubs for the sunfish and bass. Catfish are biting on worms and liver. With no trout stockings at Green Valley for two months, there’s not much action for these cold water fish.

With catfish stockings on hold over the summer months, fishing becomes more challenging requiring anglers to be adaptable and persistent. The dumb stockers are pretty much gone now, leaving behind the smarter more wary fish. The many catfish, bass and bluegill remaining in the lakes have been around for awhile and have seen a lot of the same baits, presented in the same way. Successful summer anglers have learned to change it up and experiment with new baits, new bait combinations and new presentations. Try combining a piece of shrimp with a worm, or dip a hot dog in stink bait. Do a web search for “secret catfish baits” and discover an amazing selection of concoctions sure to increase your fishing success. This is the time to make some rigging changes and try out some of the fluorocarbon fishing lines in lighter test weights to make your line practically invisible. For more bites, fish with 2-4 pound test line and keep your weights to a minimum. Keep trying new things, keep at it and have fun learning more about fishing this summer.

Fishing for catfish continues to be good to excellent the week of stocking. Now that warmer air and lake temperatures have arrived, the best catfish action is during low light or nighttime conditions. Anglers are having luck using stink baits or shrimp fished on the bottom. Sunfish continue to bite well on small worms fished under a bobber. The June 22-27 catfish stocking will be the final fish delivery of the spring stocking season. After that, catfish stockings will not resume until late September. At Green Valley lakes (Payson) most of the trout have been caught out, but anglers are enjoying great action on bluegill, crappie and bass. Try small jigs and worms fished under a bobber at Green Valley.

Several Urban Lakes and Ponds will be receiving white amurs along with the regular catfish delivery the week of June 22-27. These aquatic ‘cows’ will spend the summer grazing on the weeds just beginning to grow in many of the lakes in the Maricopa County area. White amurs, also known as grass carp, can be distinguished from the common carp by two specific features: amurs have a short dorsal fin while the common carp has a long dorsal fin that runs nearly the entire length of its back, and amurs lack the barbells around the mouth that the common carp has on each side of the upper jaw. This is important to note because while there is no bag limit on the common carp, there is a limit of only one amur per day at Urban Lakes and Ponds and the amur must be longer than 30 inches in length. Anglers are asked to release unharmed any amurs under 30 inches.

This last week of June is the final delivery of eight every-other-week spring catfish stockings. Warming lake temperatures and air temperatures make it impractical to haul live fish into Arizona’s Urban Lakes and Ponds. There are no scheduled fish stockings for July, August, and the first half of September. Catfish stockings will resume this fall in mid-September when lake and air temperatures cool enough to safely transport fish across the hot desert and into the Urban waters. Anglers can still fish for catfish, bass and bluegill at Urban waters throughout the summer, but the action is generally slower.

At Papago Park Ponds #1 and #2 similar shoreline stabilization projects are well underway. The UFP purchased over 500 tons of rock materials in this partnership project between Game and Fish and the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department. Work at Pond #1 has been completed and includes over 450 feet of restored shoreline in the most well used fishing areas. Some new shoreline access has been created and some cattail removal at the inflow site will help with water deliveries. Shoreline work at Papago Pond #2 is 25% completed. Over the next few weeks a total of 700 feet of shoreline will be rebuilt using large rock materials to create a natural, stable and long-lasting edge.
