The Arizona Game and Fish Department Region 6 Fisheries Program hosted an overnight fishing and camping clinic for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Central Arizona on April 25 and 26 at Saguaro Lake.
Participants were boated to a campsite at Bagley Flat and caught lots of bluegills. Nine little brothers and one little sister participated along with their adult brothers and sister, fondly known as their “Bigs.”
A barbecue of hot dogs and hamburgers was provided and S’mores were a big hit at the campfire that night! We made breakfast burritos in the morning.
Thanks to the generous donation from United Arizona Anglers Foundation (UAAF) we were able to provide rods and reels for each child to keep as well as the food for the outing.
Plano also donated tackle boxes for each child and we provided tackle to fill the tackle boxes. The Forest Service made sure the campsite and bathrooms were clean. Thanks to a retired Fisheries Supervisor who told us where the fish were and the depth to fish; it was truly a team effort. The bluegill bite was on and the kids were catching bluegill left and right using worms and mealworms.
