PHOENIX - Put new line on your fishing reel and get the hot dogs ready – the ever-popular Mr. Whiskers is returning to the 20 urban fishing lakes in the Valley of the Sun and the Tucson area starting the week of Sept. 15.
This is the first stocking of channel catfish in the urban lakes this fall season. But there is also something new this season – this will be the first catfish stocking ever at the newest urban fishery, Veterans Oasis Lake in Chandler (corner of Chandler Heights and Lindsay roads). Be sure to give it a try. As usual, the urban catfish stockings were suspended at the beginning of summer because of a number of factors, including the increasing water temperatures in the urban lakes. “Each year we suspend catfish stockings during the heat of summer,” explained Urban Fishing Program Manager Eric Swanson. “Now everything looks A-okay to stock the lakes. We checked the water temperatures and chemistry at all the urban lakes, and all parameters look good for our fall kick-off stocking of 1- to 3-pound cats.” |

In fact, there will be 13,000 pounds of catfish fun coming from Arkansas to delight anglers who fish Arizona’s Urban Fishing Program Lakes. And despite rumors to the contrary, no, we have never detected a slight drawl when these catfish croak – but you might want to judge for yourself.
