Essay: MY FIRST FISHING TRIP

Abby Walker, age 10, Cave Creek, Arizona
A couple of weeks ago, my grandma and grandpa took me fishing. It was my first real fishing trip, so I was very excited. I had good reasons, too. After long hours of driving, we finally reached our destination: Willow Springs Lake.

We parked, got out everything we needed, and headed down to the water. On the way down, I saw some cool stuff. There were giant logs, huge rocks, and cool pine cones. When we got down to the water, we put up a chair and opened our tackle boxes. Papa helped me get my fishing pole ready while Mimi got out a book. I learned how to cast, but I couldn’t have done it without Papa, who was a great teacher, and Mimi who gave me tons of support.

When I decided to take a break from fishing, I went exploring with Mimi. I found some cool bait, and together Mimi and I found a lot of cool tree stumps. After that, I went back to fish and play in the water.

By the time we left, I hadn’t caught anything in the lake, but I had caught something in my heart: A new love for fishing.
Editor’s Note: Abby’s essay was so inspirational that we would welcome more from other youngsters telling about their first fishing trip, or really, any fishing adventure for that matter. Just send them to me at raikens@azgfd.gov, but keep in mind I will be on leave until the first week of August.
