Note: Heavy winter storms have hit the Mogollon Rim over the last couple weeks, dropping significant rain and snow.  Most streams are flowing high and muddy due to this heavy precipitation.  Lake levels have likely come up considerably with the heavy runoff and may be turbid.  The lakes may also have a thin layer of ice, depending on night time temperatures and the amount of inflow.  Forest Service  Roads are closed and snow packed.  Contact the US Forest Service’s Black Mesa office at 928-535-4481 for information.

CHEVELON CANYON LAKE — Fishing is fair to good. Forest Road 169, north of Chevelon Canyon is open.  The lake may have a thin layer of ice. Unsafe ice conditions. Anglers have been catching rainbow trout on flies (wooly worms). Chevelon Lake is open to artificial lure and flies only, with a six-trout bag and possession limit. Trout between 10 and 14 inches may not be possessed and any trout kept outside this slot must be killed immediately and retained as part of the bag limit. Try lures such as spinners, Z-rays, Super Dupers, and Rapalas, and flies such as wooly worms or buggers, semi-seal leeches, peacock ladies, prince nymphs, and zug bugs. Chevelon Lake is a remote hike in lake with difficult access(north and south trail).  The lake is open to electric trolling motors or up to10 hp gas motors.  Chevelon Canyon Creek downstream from Chevelon Crossing to the Little Colorado River is open to unlimited rainbow and brown trout harvest from Sept. 1 through March 31.
