Rory’s Tip

December 12th, 2007

Welcome rain and snow have chilled down the state’s waters. This means the fishing has slowed down for warmwater species. On the flip side, we have more optimum conditions for winter trout fishing.

So get out your lightweight spinning rods and grab some Power Bait, night crawlers and inline spinners. Catching some trout might just make you spout ho, ho, ho.

Top winter trout fisheries include the Lower Salt River, Saguaro and Apache lakes, all within a short drive from the greater Phoenix metropolitan areas. Or if you don’t have time to travel, trout are also stocked in the urban program lakes. If you can’t make it to the trout, we bring the trout to you. Or at least close to you.

One of my favorites is Tempe Town Lake. This remarkable fishery behind inflatable dams in the normally dry Salt River bed transecting the metropolitan area is a remarkable fishery. It provides a super break this time of year for those who need a break from the work and holiday grind. Consider it holiday stress relief that can provide a low-calorie, ultra-low fat meal.

You might also visit the colorful town square in Prescott for a that hometown holiday feel, then wet a line at Goldwater Lake on Senator Highway (past all the old Victorian homes) on the shoulder of the Bradshaw Mountains just above the community.

Don’t forget – the gift that keeps on giving all year is a 2008 fishing license. Keep in mind that there is a great deal for youth (resident and nonresident): a combination hunting and fishing license is just $26.50.

In the high country, a lot of lakes will be covered with ice and others may be turbid from recent runoff (much needed!). However, once the water clears some, try Silver Creek for native Apache trout.

Good luck. Maybe I’ll see you out there.
