URBAN FISHING REPORT
Trout fishing continues to be good to excellent up to 10 days after every stocking. A 6.1 pound rainbow trout from Rio Vista Pond in Peoria is the current 2009 Big Fish-of-the-Year record. This monster was part of the special incentive stockings in early January. Most trout are falling for Power Bait fished 15-25 inches off the bottom. Other baits that are producing good catches are worms, corn and salmon eggs. Lures such as Panther Martins, Rooster Tails and Kastmasters also work well when fished 5-10 feet deep. Patience continues to be the key, as the trout bite sporadically throughout the day with little predictability. Not much happening for catfish, bass or bluegill, but with warming temperatures, action for these species will be picking up quickly over the next couple weeks. Trout fishing is consistently good to excellent at Green Valley lakes in Payson with Power Bait, corn and worms working best. Local anglers are enjoying some terrific fishing for 14-16 inchers. Also, try small, flashy lures to attract the trout.

  1. I would like to see bag limits on largemout bass reduced on some urban lakes & size limits raised to at least 18″. Way too many potentially trophy sized bass are bieng taken & not bieng replaced in the eco systems. Saw a guy take a bass that was at least 25 ” out of suprise pond & it had to be at least an 8lb bass…..Broke my heart to see her leave on a stringer. I have released all my bass to be caught again another day, if not by me, then some other angler. Id like to see fish & game do more to be sure people have thier permits & bag limits are enforced more.

I completely agree with what fishfearme has said. The bag limit for bass in urban ponds should be drastically reduced and the size limit should be increased.

  3. Ok! FishFearMe,
.For that lake, it is a 2 fish minimum.I have fished the Suprise pond many times since it’s birth. It has no shortage of trophy bass. The lake has some good structure but them bass in a spawn are eazy see and many times eazy to pull of their beds or stageing to spawn.I urge GAME+FISH to make our city ponds with better hiding for all species of fish.

  4. The Urban fishing program is Great!
