There are lots of options in improved campgrounds, semi-improved campgrounds and dispersed camping. Along the East Fork (near Buffalo Crossing and going up the canyon or river) there are a number of campgrounds to choose from, some with fair amenities, others with bathrooms, possibly water, and places to park an RV or pitch a tent, but not much else. You might even seeing Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep, elk and turkey coming by camp. It’s a great place to fish for native Apache trout.

At the West Fork, there is the West Fork Campground, where you might have to drive through the river to get to some of the nicer camping spots. It’s one of my favorite spots to camp. Some spots even have a campfire shield or a lean-to. I once work up to a herd of elk passing around my tent (the tent shook).

Best bet, get yourself an Apache-Sitgreaves Forest map, or if you are lucky, one of the ones Bob Hirsch used to produce, and you can find the ones I am talking about, and how to get there.

Good luck and good camping

Was wondering if anyone knew of a nice place to camp out, near or on, the black river (east or west fork)?
