Biologist Randy Babb will discuss the natural history of our state’s secretive wild cats, from bobcats to jaguars. Learn about their status in Arizona today, and how these stealthy, powerful predators maintain the natural balance between wildlife and their environments.

This program is part of the Summer Wildlife Speaker Series presented on Saturday evenings, from June 13 through August 1, at the AGFD Pinetop regional office. The office is located at 2878 E. Summer Saturday Evenings give visitors a unique chance to tour the Desert Museum at night, a time when many of the animals are at their most active with the onset of the summer heat. The popular Summer Saturday Evening programs showcase what happens in the desert after dark and how plants and animals adapt. Summer Saturday Evenings begin Saturday, June 6 and continue each through August 29. Cynthia Donald, birding enthusiast and member of the Maricopa Audubon Society leads this fun, interactive, in-depth program specially designed for beginning bird watchers. This class includes six classroom sessions at the Garden and four outside field trips. The field trips will be scheduled at the convenience and availability of the students during the first classroom session. Classroom format will consist of short PowerPoint presentations, discussions, group activities and question and answer sessions. Field trips will vary in length and location. The purpose of the field trips is to introduce students to a variety of resident and migrant bird species, explore a diversity of birding habitats, teach field identification techniques and highlight some of the Valley’s local birding destinations. You will leave this class with an enhanced knowledge of birding and the resources to continue developing your knowledge and skills. Limit 20.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department, along with Maricopa County Flood Control District and Knight and Associates, are hosting a FREE bat workshop. Watch as thousands of Mexican free-tail bats exit their roost for the evening at Phoenix’s largest bat colony, near the Biltmore area. Bat biologists will be on hand to answer questions, and they will be bringing some live bats to see up close.

The event is free to the public. Educators are also encouraged to attend and receive continuing education credit.

PARKING: Those attending a workshop should park at the commercial building located at 2400 E. Arizona Biltmore Circle. Where: The work area is near the Mogollon Rim, southeast of Clint’s Well. From Hwy 87, turn southeast on FR 95, which is just northeast of the Blue Ridge Ranger Station. Follow FR 95 about 8 miles and turn left on FR139. Proceed about 4 more miles to the campsite.

Location: NF 139 and NF139G

Look for signs at campsite on left side of the road. This is primitive camping without facilities. Port-a-johns will be on site.

Description: We will be removing unneeded fences on the Buck Springs Allotment starting with fences in a riparian area. We need approximately 40-50 volunteers to accomplish this project. We hope to remove about 6 miles of fence this year; the actual work finished depends on the number of workers.

We are a family oriented organization; however projects are potentially dangerous working with barbed wire, power tools and vehicles. Kids under 18 need to be supervised by an adult.

Tools: Please bring pliers, gloves, and wire cutters if you have them. Some of these items will also be provided. Please make sure you bring appropriate hats, long sleeve shirts, sunblock etc. for sun protection. Also be prepared for cool mornings and even possibly rain. Old clothes would be recommended for those working with the barbed wire fences.

We will be providing meals Friday night, Saturday breakfast, lunch and dinner, and Sunday breakfast.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department is again offering a unique opportunity for people to learn more about Arizona’s hummingbirds at the 7th annual High Country Hummers event. On Saturday, July 25, a hummingbird banding team from the Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory will conduct a capture and bird-banding event that is free and open to the public at the department’s Sipe White Mountain Wildlife Area in eastern Arizona.

This is a fantastic opportunity for people to get up close and personal with these flying jewels. Observers will be able to interact with the team as they capture, measure, weigh and band birds. They will also be able to use a stethoscope to hear a hummingbird’s heart beat more than 200 times a minute.

Other fun programs will be offered at the wildlife area that day. There will be exhibits featuring live hawks, owls and reptiles. Visitors can also view a slide presentation on hummingbird natural history. Plus, people are welcome to explore the visitor center’s interpretive displays on wildlife, habitats, prehistoric culture and conservation. Come prepared to spend most of the morning outdoors, with potential of monsoon rains. It’s a good idea to bring binoculars and a camera, as there will be plenty of great, close-up photo opportunities.

The Springerville-Eagar Regional Chamber of Commerce will provide a breakfast and lunch concession with food and beverages.

The Sipe Wildlife Area is located southeast of Eagar and Springerville. From Eagar, take Highway 191 toward Alpine for about two miles to the signed turnoff at the top of the first hill. The first day is a mandatory, educational classroom presentation on bighorn sheep followed the next day by a trip up the Colorado River from Willow Beach to the Hoover Dam ... and back, of course, to see these majestic animals in their native habitat.
This effort always provides fantastic photographic opportunities, so please bring a camera. However, it will be hot, so make sure to bring some water, a hat, and sun screen.
The workshop is free, although there is a $20 per person refundable deposit to discourage no-shows.

There is space for 40 participants, which are drawn at random on June 22.
