!

Nice flathead!!! That's awesome to be pulling them out when it's cold like this, I've heard they are **** near dormant in the winter months. Good job!

Flathead Catfish Background

We were trolling crankbaits in 12ft of water with 10lb line & bass spinning rods. Water temp was 44 degrees and zero visibility. Fish was accidentally tail hooked (oops!) with the firetiger crankbait in the photo. Took 30 minutes to bring to the boat & no net aboard. Had to noodle the fish in the boat with one hand in the mouth and one in the gills. The fish bit me hard but I had gloves on. Just over 40 inches long and 36inches around.

Flathead Catfish Answers

I agree with JNHoffman57. The fish was really sluggish. If the water was not 44degrees, I really don't think I could have landed the fish on 10lb line. The line would have broken or the drag would have siezed. Certainly was lucky!!! FYI I have caught large carp on light line before. The trick is to pull the trolling & main motors. Let the big fish pull the boat around and be patient. No rushing and dont touch the drag. Easier said than done when your heart is pounding!!!
