Leftover javelina, turkey, bear hunting permits available

Everybody loves leftovers, and hunters interested in pursuing a springtime harvest can now apply for one of the remaining javelina, Merriam’s turkey and bear permits.

There are plenty of great spring hunts to choose from, and the Arizona Game and Fish Department will be issuing the limited permits to applicants on a first-come, first-served basis.

Even though there are thousands of tags left over from the spring draw, the popular hunts that are conveniently located to metro areas or best known for their hunt success will go quickly.

For those interested in hunting javelina, there are permits remaining for every hunt type including:

    * Archery-only javelina, Jan. 1-20, 2011
* Juniors-only javelina, Jan. 21-30, 2011
* H.A.M. (handgun, archery and muzzleloader) javelina, Feb. 4-13, 2011
* General (rifle) javelina, Feb. 18-24, 2011

Spring turkey gobbler permits remaining will put hunters in excellent turkey country when these gregarious birds are displaying their courting rituals of strutting and gobbling, including:

    * Juniors-only spring turkey (limited weapon shotgun shooting shot), Apr. 15-21 and May 6-19, 2011
* General spring turkey (limited weapon shotgun shooting shot), seasons vary starting April 22 and closing May 19, 2011

For those adventurous archery hunters, test your skills hunting spring bear in a handful of popular units during the following season:

    * Archery-only spring bear, April 29 – July 31, 2011

Leftover hunt permit-tags can be obtained two ways:

    * Mailed application: Beginning Monday, Nov. 29 at 8 a.m. (MST) Game and Fish will accept applications by mail only in the same way as the regular drawing process. Completed applications must be sent by U.S. mail to: Arizona Game and Fish Department, Attn: Drawing Section, PO Box 74020, Phoenix, AZ 85087-1052.
* Walk in: After 8 a.m. (MST) on Monday, Dec. 6, leftover tags are also available for purchase in person from any of the seven Arizona Game and Fish Department offices. There are offices in Phoenix, Pinetop, Flagstaff, Kingman, Yuma, Tucson and Mesa. For addresses and a map of Game and Fish offices, visit www.azgfd.gov/offices.

To apply, hunters will need to get the four-digit hunt number from the listing of leftover tags, the 2011 Spring Turkey, Javelina, Buffalo and Bear Hunt Draw Information booklet (regulations), and the Hunt Permit/Tag Application form which are all available at www.azgfd.gov/draw. The spring hunt regulations and application forms can be obtained from any license dealer.

For those who qualify, there are military hunts available at Camp Navajo; for information, call (928) 773-3274.

Hunters are reminded they will need a 2011 hunting license to apply. Licenses can be purchased through the application process, at Game and Fish offices and website, or at more than 300 license dealers statewide.

Give fishing memories this holiday season

If you want a special gift for your family and friends, take them fishing this holiday season.

“Take time during the hectic holidays to reconnect with your family, friends and nature,” recommends Rory Aikens, the fishing report editor for the Arizona Game and Fish Department. “The memories might last a lot longer than most toys or other gifts.”

You can reel in some superb trout fishing opportunities in town, close to town and not far out of town.

The Urban Program lakes are routinely stocked with trout. By the way, almost next door to the Pagago Ponds (a blue ribbon urban bass fishery), you can go see the Las Noches de Las Luminarias at the Desert Botanical Gardens or go visit the Zoo Lights.

Tempe Town Lake is also a good holiday catch. The Game and Fish Department is doing an extra stocking of rainbows just before the winter school break. Hey, and don’t miss the Tempe Lights Boat Parade on Dec. 11. Word has it that a jolly old elf will appear.

Both Canyon and Saguaro lakes are also stocked with trout during winter and you might also catch some pretty nice bass or take a scenic ride on an old paddle wheeler. The desert bighorn sheep are making a comeback in the area and you might just see them.

Game and Fish also stocks trout in the lakes around Prescott, which is a great community to catch plenty of Yuletide spirit around the Courthouse Square. The courthouse lighting is Dec. 4.

The Verde River from Cottonwood to Camp Verde is also stocked with rainbows, as is Dead Horse Ranch State Park near Cottonwood.

“This is also a wonderful time of year to explore nearby ancient Indian ruins at Tuzigoot and Montezuma’s Castle once you’ve filled your creel full of fishing memories,” Aikens advised.

Oak Creek provides plenty of scenic fishing opportunities for both novice and veteran anglers. You can also experience lingering autumn colors along with Sedona’s Red Rock Fantasy Lights.

Trout are stocked along Casino Row below Davis Dam and some lucky anglers are even reeling in some 20- to 22-inch monsters amidst a winter wonderland of neon lights.

A holiday trek to Lake Havasu might net you some ferocious smallmouth or striped bass and also gaze at a million or so colorful lights around London Bridge. The Annual Boat Parade of Lights is Dec. 4.

Willow Beach below Hoover Dam is also stocked with rainbows. There is a new fishing pier that provides anglers with very good opportunities to catch trout, and maybe even a huge striped bass or two. You might even find a holiday float trip through Black Canyon to be a special holiday experience.

Your favorite trout angler might also treasure another gift – a guided fishing trip to Arizona’s most famous trout fishery, Lee’s Ferry. The rainbow trout are beginning to don their crimson-sided spawning colors. Experiencing a wild trout dancing on the end of the line in the spectacular Marble Canyon Gorge is the memory of a lifetime.

“Fill your stockings with outdoor memories this holiday season. You might also discover it is the best ho ho ho for the buck. Or is that reindeer?” Aikens pondered.

Outdoor recreationists asked to help bald eagles during breeding season

Each year as part of its highly successful program to manage and conserve bald eagles in the state, the Arizona Game and Fish Department asks outdoor recreationists to help protect important eagle breeding areas by honoring the closure of 21 areas across the state. Various land and wildlife management agencies close the breeding areas for part of the year, beginning in December, to protect the state’s 52 breeding pairs of bald eagles. Some of the closure areas are located near popular recreation sites.

“Bald eagles are continuing to do well in Arizona, but they are sensitive to human activity during the breeding season and it can take as little as 30 minutes of leaving the eggs uncovered for a breeding attempt to fail,” says Kenneth Jacobson, head of the Arizona Game and Fish Department Bald Eagle Management Program. “Cooperation from outdoor recreationists during the breeding season has helped the population continue to grow.”

The bald eagle was federally listed as an endangered species in 1978. Nationally, the birds recovered enough to be removed from the list in 2007.

In December, Arizona bald eagles begin rebuilding nests in preparation for laying eggs. During this time, land and wildlife management agencies enact the seasonal breeding area closures. Bald eagles nest, forage and roost at the rivers and lakes that have become some of Arizona’s most popular recreation spots, and this time of year can be challenging for the birds.

Game and Fish’s bald eagle management efforts are supported by the Heritage Fund, an initiative passed 20 years ago to provide for wildlife education and conservation through Arizona lottery ticket sales.

TIPS FOR VISITING EAGLE AREAS

If you are visiting bald eagle country, an advance call to the local land management agency (USDA Forest Service district, etc.) or the Arizona Game and Fish Department may help you plan your trip to avoid disturbing bald eagles. By following these simple guidelines, we can all help ensure that our living wildlife legacy will last for generations to come:

    * Enjoy bald eagles from outside the closures, especially during critical nesting times (December to June). These areas are posted with signs and/or buoys, and most have daily nestwatch monitors. Anyone approached by a nestwatcher and asked to cease an activity or leave a closed area should comply. A few good places to see bald eagles without disturbing them (during December and January) are at Lake Mary and Mormon Lake near Flagstaff or on the Verde River Canyon Train in Clarkdale.
* Bald eagles protecting an active nest will let you know if you are too close. If a bald eagle is vocalizing and circling the area frantically, you are too close and need to leave the area quickly. Bald eagles incubating eggs or brooding small young should never be off the nest for more than 15 minutes.
* Pilots should maintain the FAA-recommended 2,000-foot AGL advisory when flying over bald eagle habitat along the Salt and Verde Rivers, Lake Pleasant and Alamo Lake. These areas are designated on the Phoenix Sectional Aeronautical Map. Special brochures for pilots regarding this advisory can be obtained by calling the Arizona Department of Transportation or the Arizona Game and Fish Department’s nongame branch, (623) 236-7506.
* Help from anglers is especially needed. Monofilament and tackle has killed two nestlings and has been found in two-thirds of all bald eagle nests in the state. Every year we remove this potentially lethal material from nests and/or entangled nestlings. Ospreys, shorebirds, waterfowl and songbirds also succumb to this litter. Do not discard any type of monofilament along rivers and lakes, but recycle it at fishing stores. Keep your monofilament fresh; do not use old brittle line. Make sure to use the correct test line for the fish you are trying to catch. Also, do not cut the line when an undesirable fish is caught and return it to the water with the hook and line attached.

You can help bald eagle research and recovery efforts by reporting any harassment or shooting of bald eagles. Call the Arizona Game and Fish Operation Game Thief Hotline at 1-800-352-0700 or U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Law Enforcement at (480) 967-7900.

2010 survey results released for desert bighorn sheep on the Kofa NWR
Populations remain low; management agencies’ concern is still high

The recently completed survey of the desert bighorn sheep population on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Kofa National Wildlife Refuge in southwestern Arizona resulted in a population estimate of 402 sheep.

The survey estimate is down from the 2009 survey estimate of 410 sheep, but it is still slightly above the lowest recorded estimated level of the 2006 survey of 390.

Due to standardized survey methodology and scientific margin of accuracy, biologists’ analysis of the past five surveys indicates no significant decline or improvement to the herd’s population.

Wildlife management agencies remain concerned about the low population levels on the refuge compared to the estimated 812 animals of the 2000 survey.

Once a very robust population, the size of the herd on the refuge has dropped significantly since 2000. Wildlife experts attribute the decline to a variety of potential factors including drought, predation, water availability, disease and human disturbance. Due to the significance of this sheep population, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and Arizona Game and Fish Department (AGFD) are conducting an ongoing, joint study to collect data on these and other suspected causes of the population’s decline.

Seasonal rains in 2010 were good; consequently habitat conditions are also favorable throughout the refuge. All of the sheep appeared healthy during the aerial surveys. Biologists observed lamb-to-ewe ratios of 24 lambs per 100 ewes, which is above the long-term average of approximately 20 lambs per 100 ewes for the refuge. However, a slightly higher lamb-to-ewe ratio has not yet translated into an increase in the population – it has only stabilized it.

The New Mexico State University Cooperative Studies Unit is studying the relative health of bighorn sheep on the refuge. In November 2007, 30 ewes were fitted with tracking devices to monitor nutrition, movements, and mortality to assist in making active management decisions to assist in restoring the herd’s population. The project study is scheduled to run through the fall of 2010. The ewes were evaluated in November 2010 using ultrasound technology. Body fat composition indicated good nutrition and nearly all of the ewes were pregnant. Other biological samples were collected for disease analysis and have been sent to various laboratories.

AGFD and USFWS biologists captured a male mountain lion in November 2010 on Kofa NWR. A satellite GPS collar was fitted on the lion pursuant to the ongoing effort to monitor mountain lions and remove lions that regularly prey on desert bighorn sheep as described in the final environmental assessment “Limiting Mountain Lion Predation on Desert Bighorn Sheep on the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge” and the AGFD Kofa Mountains Complex Adaptive Predation Management Plan.

To view the management documents and learn more about the restoration efforts of the Kofa desert bighorn sheep herd, visit the Arizona Game and Fish Department’s website at www.azgfd.gov/kofa. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Kofa National Wildlife Refuge website is at www.fws.gov/southwest/refuges/arizona/kofa/index.html.

Public meetings scheduled on aquatic invasive species regulations and management plan
Written comment can be submitted through Jan. 10, 2011

The Arizona Game and Fish Department will host a series of public meetings and a webcast to discuss draft updated regulations and a draft management plan to fight the spread of aquatic invasive species in Arizona waters.

The draft regulations, or “Director’s Orders,” will update the list of species considered aquatic invasives, update the list of the waters that contain them, and revise the mandatory conditions for moving boats from those waters.

“It is critical for anyone who owns or uses watercraft, or has a business reliant on watercraft, to understand the essential nature of this aquatic invasive species containment effort,” said Tom McMahon, invasive species program coordinator with Game and Fish. “The spread of aquatic invasive species, such as quagga mussels and crayfish, have far-reaching impacts, both financial and ecological, that can touch virtually every resident of the state.”

Volunteers sought for annual Christmas bird counts

You can help wildlife conservation and enjoy a wildlife-viewing experience by participating in one or more annual Arizona Christmas Bird Counts in December and early January.

The count program is a bird population survey that has been coordinated annually by the National Audubon Society since 1900. For each count, volunteers (including those from the Arizona Game and Fish Department) will take to the field for one calendar day between Dec. 14, 2010 and Jan. 5, 2011, to record every bird species and every individual bird sighted within a designated 15-mile diameter area. There are more than 30 counting events scheduled in different parts of the state during that time period.

The data collected will be added to an extensive database that enables monitoring of winter bird populations across North America and helps in assessing the overall health of the environment.

Participants are typically assigned to teams based on their bird identification skill level and endurance. Many counts hold a compilation dinner at the end of the day where results are tabulated and stories shared. A $5 participation fee defrays a portion of the cost of tabulating and publishing the overall count results.

Volunteer help is needed on most of these counts. To find a list of counts and areas, visit www.azgfd.gov/w_c/documents/ChristmasBirdCountSchedule_2010.pdf or www.azfo.org/CBC/cbc2010_2011.html. For more information, contact the coordinator listed for the date or location.

Public meeting dates set for seven locations

The Arizona Game and Fish Department will hold a series of public meetings and accept public comment as part of an effort to update and revise Arizona’s State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP).

This document, previously known as the Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy, was accepted by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s National Acceptance Advisory Team in April 2006. The approved plan requires the department to conduct a public review of the plan after the fourth year.

Arizona’s SWAP is unlike existing recovery plans and other regulatory documents in that it builds on and complements existing plans and wildlife conservation projects that are already underway. The plan outlines strategies and conservation actions aimed at promoting partnerships and coordinating efforts among all who hold a stake in conserving Arizona’s wildlife. As such, the plan addresses the full array of wildlife and habitats but focuses on identifying and managing the “wildlife and biotic communities of greatest conservation need”.

The review will focus on three main areas of the plan:

The “Species of Greatest Conservation Need,” including the criteria used to determine their status and their spatial distributions.

The spatial distribution of stressors to wildlife, including a vulnerability assessment for climate change.

Delineation of landscapes of conservation concern.

The public meetings are scheduled to run from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the following dates:

Tuesday, Dec. 15, Kingman, Arizona Game and Fish Department Kingman regional office, 5325 N. Stockton Hill Road.

Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, Tucson, Arizona Game and Fish Department Tucson regional office, 555 N. Greasewood Road.

Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010, Yuma, Arizona Game and Fish Department Yuma regional office, 9140 E. 28th St.

Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, Mesa, Arizona Game and Fish Department Mesa regional office, 7200 E. University Drive.

Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010, Pinetop, Arizona Game and Fish Department Pinetop regional office, 2878 E. White Mountain Blvd.

Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010, Flagstaff, Radisson Woodlands Hotel,1175 West Route 66.

Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010, Phoenix, Arizona Game and Fish Department Headquarters, 5000 W. Carefree Highway.

The public meetings will include a formal presentation followed by the opportunity to participate in working groups that will discuss the plan’s main areas listed above.

In addition, the department will post the existing document and proposed changes at www.azgfd.gov/w_c/cwcs.shtml. The Web page will have a mechanism for people to submit comments to the department.

For over a decade, a coalition of more than 3,000 conservation organizations known as “Teaming With Wildlife” has labored to keep species from becoming endangered by increasing state and federal funding for wildlife conservation. This effort culminated in 2001 when federal legislation established a new State Wildlife Grant (SWG) program. SWG funds are used to support the needs of wildlife, their habitats, and related recreational and educational activities.

In order to continue receiving SWG funds, each of the 56 U.S. states and territories was required, by Congress, to submit a SWAP for approval to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Guidelines for developing the state plans and the eight required elements in each plan were established by state fish and wildlife agencies working with the International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies and the Teaming With Wildlife Committee.

Arizona’s SWAP is the culmination of a two-year effort during which the department solicited input from numerous experts, resource professionals, federal and state agencies, sportsmen groups, conservation organizations, Native American tribes, recreational groups, local governments and private citizens, and integrated those ideas and concerns into a single, comprehensive vision for managing Arizona’s fish, wildlife, and wildlife habitats.

The department is encouraging all of those previous participants, as well as any other member of the public, to contribute to this review effort.

The “user play/user pay” program known as the OHV Decal program went into effect Jan. 1, 2009. The program requires the annual purchase of an OHV Decal for any off-highway vehicle that is designed by the manufacturer primarily for travel over unimproved terrain and weighs 1,800 pounds or less.

Remember, the OHV Decal you purchased is valid for one year from the date of purchase. No renewal notice will be sent to you about the expiration of your decal, so it is your responsibility to make sure your vehicle is up-to-date. For example, if you purchased your OHV Decal in January of 2009, you have until Jan. 31, 2010 to purchase the renewal decal.

The OHV Decal program was started to help better manage the explosive growth of OHV use in Arizona. Revenue collected through this program is already being used toward education programs, public information products and OHV law enforcement efforts, including hiring seven new OHV law enforcement officers. These new officers will specialize in OHV enforcement, promoting safe and responsible use. Future revenue will be used to bolster grants which fund trail restoration and clean-up projects, with the goal of sustainable OHV management and motorized access.

Law enforcement officers across the state, including those in the national forests and on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands, are enforcing the requirement for the OHV Decal. Don’t let a citation be your reminder to get or renew your decal. New OHV Decal enforcement efforts are being created, and targeted multi-officer efforts will be happening around the state with little or no notice.

OHV Decals are available at any MVD office, MVD third-party service provider, or online at www.servicearizona.com.

For more information about the OHV Decal program, go online to www.azgfd.gov/ohv.

Arizona Game and Fish Department officers participated in a joint law enforcement checkpoint on Nov. 29 in the Rincon Mountains that screened 163 vehicles, issuing one citation for failure to tag a harvested deer and warning 11 off-highway vehicle (OHV) operators for not displaying required OHV stickers.

The 11 warnings were issued to OHV operators with vehicles on trailers. They were among 23 OHVs screened at the day-long checkpoint on Redington Pass Road also manned by the U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service and Pima County Sheriff’s Office. More than 50 hunters were screened, eight of whom had taken deer.

“If the OHV operators that we warned had been driving their vehicles on the road or elsewhere, they would have been cited,” said Raul Vega, acting supervisor for the Game and Fish Department’s Region V (southeastern Arizona). “We have a zero-tolerance policy for OHVs that are not properly tagged and licensed.”

The statewide compliance rate for the Arizona OHV Decal program, which took effect Jan. 1, 2009, has only been 21 percent. All OHVs weighing 1,800 pounds or less and designed by the manufacturer primarily for travel over unimproved terrain are required by state law to display an OHV sticker and bear a license plate. Flyers about the program were distributed at the checkpoint. The following article contains additional information about the OHV Decal program.

The checkpoint was also staged because hunting seasons were ongoing in Region V for white-tailed deer, elk, dove, sandhill crane and quail.

The public is encouraged to visit www.azgfd.gov or www.servicearizona.com for more information about required hunting licenses and tags, as well as for those required for OHVs.

It’s time again for Arizona’s bald eagles to begin their breeding activities, and outdoor recreationists are asked to help protect important breeding areas by honoring the closure of 20 areas across the state.

Various land and wildlife management agencies close the breeding areas for part of the year, beginning in December, to protect the state’s 50 breeding pairs of bald eagles. Some of the closure areas are located near popular recreation sites.

“Even though the bald eagle is federally protected under the Endangered Species Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, they still require the public’s help to reproduce successfully and flourish in the state,” says Kenneth Jacobson, head of the Arizona Game and Fish Department Bald Eagle Management Program. “Human activity near active bald eagle nests can cause a breeding pair to leave its eggs uncovered, leading to a failed breeding attempt. It can take only 30 minutes for a breeding attempt to fail.”

The bald eagle was federally listed as an endangered species in 1978. Nationally, the birds recovered enough to be removed from the list in August 2007, but they remain listed as an endangered species in Arizona.

However, Jacobson says, “With the public’s help and cooperation, we can all take responsibility for ensuring that Arizona bald eagles breed successfully.”

Enjoy bald eagles from outside the closures, especially during critical nesting times (December to June).

Bald eagles protecting an active nest will let you know if you are too close. If a bald eagle is vocalizing and circling the area frantically, you are too close and need to leave the area quickly. Bald eagles incubating eggs or brooding small young should never be off the nest for more than 15 minutes.

Pilots should maintain the FAA-recommended 2,000-foot AGL advisory when flying over bald eagle habitat. These areas are designated on the Phoenix Sectional Aeronautical Map. Special brochures for pilots regarding this advisory can be obtained by calling the Arizona Department of Transportation or the Arizona Game and Fish Department’s nongame branch, (623) 236-7506.

Help from anglers is especially needed.

Biologists estimate that a range of 250 (plus or minus 11) Mount Graham red squirrels currently occupy the Pinaleño Mountain range, also known as Mount Graham. These results are lower than the fall 2008 estimate of 263 (plus or minus 11) squirrels.

The red squirrel survey is conducted by visiting a random number of known middens (areas where red squirrels store or cache their cones). The activity rate is then extrapolated across the total number of known middens to determine the population estimate. While spring surveys provide us with a look at recruitment numbers, activity is often difficult to detect during the spring. This can result in fluctuating (variable) estimates. Because cached cones are easier to detect during the fall survey, fall population estimates may be easier to compare from year to year. No spring survey was conducted in 2009.

Although none of the population estimates statistically indicate a trend in the population, our estimates show two groups of figures with a spike during 1998-2000. It is apparent that Mount Graham red squirrels had a population of around 350 individuals from 1991-1997, and over the last nine years (2001-2009) the number has fallen to somewhere around 250 individuals. A combination of drought, poor cone crops, fires, and insects may have caused reductions to the population. As with other small mammals, biologists are confident, that given the right conditions, Mount Graham red squirrels may be able to rebound as shown during 1998-2000.

In 2005, the Department of Agriculture enacted a new planning rule to manage motorized vehicle use on all national forests and grasslands. This rule requires the Tonto National Forest to designate those roads, trails, and areas that are open to motor vehicle use. Designations will be made by class of vehicle and, if appropriate, by time of year. The final rule will prohibit the use of motor vehicles off the designated system, as well as use of motor vehicles on routes and in areas that are not consistent with the designations.

Based on public input, the alternatives will then be proposed in a draft Environmental Assessment (EA) which will be released to the public for comment. The final product will be a Motor Vehicle Use Map that shows which roads and trails will be open to motor vehicle use.

In addition, Kline noted that once the Gila trout population there stabilizes as early as three years from now, anglers will be able to fish for five species of trout on the same mountain, including the hybrid Apache, brown, rainbow and brook trout.

Five miles of Frye Creek from its headwaters to the Frye Mesa Reservoir have been closed to fishing since mid-October, and will remain so until the Gila trout population there is thriving. Thereafter, “limited opportunity” fishing will be initially allowed.Fishing at the reservoir is still permitted.

Do you want the latest news, updates, videos and photographs from the Arizona Game and Fish Department, and even get the opportunity to chat with others who share your interests?

Then become a “fan” of the Arizona Game and Fish Department on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/azgafd. It’s interesting. It can be loads of fun. And you can connect up with others who share your same outdoor interests.

“Currently, there are 26,480 Arizonans on Facebook who have indicated they like fishing, hunting, shooting sports, boating and similar outdoor activities, so you’ll potentially have a lot of new friends out there who share your outdoor passions,” said Public Information Officer Rory Aikens, who himself is a recent Facebook convert.

The Game and Fish Department is also on another social network, Twitter. “We are using these communication outlets to provide outdoor enthusiasts with multiple ways to get timely information even while they are on the go,” Aikens said.

The department also has a robust Web presence at www.azgfd.gov and uses e-mail-based subscriptions to send news updates, fishing reports, hunter highlights and a number of other e-news products.

You can even go blogging at the Game and Fish Department, post photographs, and share such things as fishing or hunting experiences.

“These evolving social networking sites provide all of us another opportunity to get timely information, share ideas or experiences, and become involved in the outdoor world, even while sitting indoors dreaming about our next outing,” Aikens said.

The department has added a “Share or Bookmark” bar to our articles, blogs, outdoor calendar dates, and user photo sections. This makes it easier than ever to share news and photos with your friends and family on Facebook, Twitter, E-mail, and 150+ other bookmarking and sharing services.

Dig out the deeks and limber up those duck calls – the desert zone waterfowl hunting takes flight on Oct. 23 and closes on Jan. 31, but the best hunting may still be in the high country.

A lot of waterfowl hunters have already been taking advantage of the mountain zone waterfowl opportunities. Now the season has shifted to the lower elevations as well.

Randy Babb, an Arizona Game and Fish biologist and veteran duck hunter, said waterfowl reproduction estimates for this year are good in North America, with most species showing an increase in numbers. Summer surveys this year indicated nesting was generally up.

“A common problem we experience in Arizona, despite nesting success, is warm winter weather. Often warm winters in the western states will ‘short-stop’ much of the migrating waterfowl before they make it to the southern U.S. So while states north of us (Utah, Nevada, etc.) enjoy fantastic hunting, we experience sporadic shooting at best,” Babb pointed out.

On the other hand, he said, if warm weather keeps Arizona’s high country waters open, many ducks and geese will spend the winter there rather than migrating to lower elevations.

“Simply put, many migrating waterfowl species go no farther south than they have to. If we have a warm winter, our state’s high elevations will likely offer the best hunting,” Babb said.

The early part of the season offers the best opportunities for some of the early migrants like cinnamon and blue-wing teal. November is usually when waterfowl hunting in the desert areas really picks up.

”At this time free water at northern latitudes typically becomes scarce, forcing birds southward to seek feeding and resting areas. Mornings after big winter storms and severe cold snaps are often an excellent time to check desert stock ponds for ducks,” Babb said.

Decoys will prove useful on central Arizona lakes, rivers, and ponds. “If you are decoying, you’ll want to start early. Have your decoys set and your blind built before legal shooting time comes. Once again, a little scouting will be a big help in finding a productive shooting spot,” Babb said.

Ducks tend to congregate in backwaters, slow runs on rivers, and sheltered areas on lakes such as coves and the mouths of rivers and creeks.

“With some scouting you will discover that though there may be several spots that seem to look good and are used by ducks, there is one or a few spots that they prefer. Set out your decoys and build your blind while it is still dark so you will be situated at legal shooting time,” he advises.

Typically the best shooting is in the first couple of hours of the day, so it is important to be ready by legal shooting time. “On a typical duck hunt, shooting is usually over by 10 or 11 a.m. Geese generally fly a little later than ducks, but you’ll still want to be prepared by first light,” Babb said.

Ducks will tend to move more in inclement weather, so shooting often lasts longer on these days. “Ducks have excellent eyesight and color vision, so keep this in mind when hunting them. Camouflage is recommended. It is also very important to remain motionless while birds are working the decoys or coming in,” said the veteran waterfowler.

To retrieve downed birds from stock tanks, try using a fishing rod rigged with a topwater plug. Cast over dead birds and reel them in. The same rig fitted with a diving plug will retrieve decoys in deep water by snagging the anchor line. Remember, only non-toxic or steel shot may be used for ducks and geese.

Arizona Game and Fish offers fun shoots

Step off the range and into the field and expand your archery skills in judging distances, terrain, and identifying the target zone on a variety of life-sized 3-D targets in a natural desert setting.

All ages and skill levels are welcome, so bring the entire family out to the Ben Avery Shooting Facility in north Phoenix to enjoy some cool fresh air and the Sonoran landscape. The 20-target course will add a new dimension to your archery skills.

“The course uses life-like animal targets (elk, turkey, bear, deer, etc.) set in the desert landscape and it makes for a fun and challenging shoot,” said Mike Raum, bowhunter education coordinator for Arizona Game and Fish. “On 3-D courses the distances are not marked. Targets could be on a hill or in a valley, and the scoring area varies on each target, much different from the target range. It’s a lot of fun.”

There are three shoots available this fall. No registration is required and the cost is minimal. For participants 17 and younger the course fee is only $3. The cost is $12 (includes $7 range fee) for shooters 18 and older. The scheduled shoots are:

Saturday, Oct. 31, open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Saturday, Nov. 14, open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Saturday, Dec 19, open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Additionally, the course is open to all Arizona Archery in the Schools shooters as part of the 3-D Regional Shoot. For Archery in the Schools 3-D information, please contact Tanja Washburn at (623) 236-7233 or twashburn@azgfd.gov

The Ben Avery Shooting Facility is located on the northwest corner of I-17 and Carefree Highway. Archers can enter the range at Archery Drive, which is the first light on Carefree Highway about 1.25 miles west of I-17. For a facility brochure and site map, visit www.azgfd.gov/basf.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department is offering a Family Archery Program at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility in Phoenix beginning Oct. 12. This introductory program is designed to give families a hands-on experience to learn more about archery and possibly start a new family tradition.

The program focuses on three specific archery disciplines: target, field, and 3D archery. Each participant is taught range rules, bow and arrow safety and handling, correct form and stance, and scoring for the different discipline venues.

The three-session program will be held Oct. 31, Nov. 7 and Nov. 14 (all Saturdays) from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The first session is mandatory and pre-registration is required. Participants must be 8 years of age or older.

The cost for the entire program is $40 for individuals, $45 for teams (at least one child and one adult), and $50 for families (at least one child and two adults). Equipment will be provided, however archers may bring their own equipment.

The Ben Avery Shooting Facility is located along Carefree Highway just west of the I-17 in Phoenix.

To pre-register for this event, please contact Brett Moser at (623) 582-8313 or e-mail bmoser@azgfd.gov.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department, Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, and the Goodyear and Avondale Police Departments are instituting a collaborative protocol for enforcement of state and local laws to better protect the Tres Rios Project Area in the southwest Valley.

Under the agreement, announced Oct. 15, the agencies will collaborate on law enforcement patrols, signage, and investigation and prosecution of crimes that occur in the Tres Rios Project Area. The agencies will also participate in coordination of clean-up efforts in the area.

The Tres Rios Project Area encompasses portions of the Salt, Gila and Agua Fria rivers and includes the 200-acre Base and Meridian Wildlife Area located near Phoenix International Raceway about 15 miles west of Phoenix. The area includes unique riparian habitat but has been impacted in recent years by littering and various other illegal and inappropriate activities.

“We’re excited about this effort to enhance the Gila River corridor and its special riparian environment,” said Rod Lucas, supervisor for Game and Fish’s Mesa region, which covers much of central Arizona. “We hope our work together will make this area an enjoyable destination experience for the community, families and other visitors.”

The area also hosts the annual Tres Rios Nature Festival each March, which showcases the history and special ecology of the area. The upcoming festival will be held March 6-7, 2010 at the Base and Meridian Wildlife Area.
